We are having our honeymoon in June 2025 - just a long weekend - in Edinburgh. So please recommend me places to stay and eat, things to do, lovely shops.

Many thanks

I stayed at the Rutland many years ago and it was excellent - lovely castle view. Looking online it looks like it’s still fairly favourably reviewed?

DSis was underwhelmed by the Balmoral - but I’ve never had the budget for it to be a problem!

The Witchery Hotel and restaurant is amazing

Gorgonemilezola · 19/09/2024 19:00

Noooooooooo, not the Witchery. Style over substance. We've never had a meal there worth the money.

Noto, Purslane, Timberyard all much nicer.

Good shopping in the New Town and Stockbridge. The botanics is a nice walk from the city and a lovely place to spend the afternoon.

Stockbridge is a lovely part to stay in. You can rent some gorgeous flats / townhouses.

I love the Raeburn but maybe too casual for your honeymoon.
Stockbridge is old and beautiful and it only takes 10-15 minutes to walk into the centre of town.
Stockbridgd also has lots of bakeries and coffee shops . The Scran and Scallie is great for food . Dont be put off by the pub grub sounding menu - it’s much more sophisticated than that . scranandscallie.com/ scranandscallie.com/]]]]

Dont stay near the Royal Mile area. It’s good to visit but very busy and touristy.

Mary Kings close is fascinating and a great place to visit. www.realmarykingsclose.com/ www.realmarykingsclose.com/]]]]

The guided walks are good too. We enjoyed the ones looking at the Edinburgh vaults

There's a lovely market in Stockbridge on a Sunday that's worth a wee wander!

Sockettes · 19/09/2024 19:18

The Witchery is beautiful!

Massive volcano - Arthur's seat

We stayed at the Tigerlily for our first wedding anniversary and it was glorious. Make sure you put in your notes that it's a special occasion. They upgraded our room and gave us prosecco and afternoon tea for no extra charge.

We had a lovely afternoon at the Kitchin, if your budget stretches to it. Fabulous food and service.

The secret garden at the Witchery

Lyla

Both fantastic restaurants

Thank you everyone. Lots to google today!

If a tasting menu is your thing, eat at at at least one of:
Lyla
Eòrna
Heron

Lyla is probably the best restaurant we have eaten at in Edinburgh and I would say is at 2* Michelin level, but comes at a price consistent with that. Beautifully presented food.

Eòrna is much smaller; a counter restaurant with just 12 seats - 1 chef and 1 sommelier/front of house. Despite the counter, an intimate experience.

Heron - buzzy restaurant in Leith.

Other places we have enjoyed eating:
Dùthchas - Scottish tasting menu
Little Chartroom
Leftfield - seafood

Can also suggest more budget friendly options, mainly around Leith, if that would be useful.
