Spa Hotel for a Christmas Break - Wales or Scotland

Can anyone recommend a Welsh or Scottish hotel (preferably with a spa) for a three night Christmas break within four hours drive of York. I don't want to drive South or go to the Lakes/Northern England.

I've thought about Edinburgh, can't justify the Balmoral's Xmas break price but I have got an Edinburgh hotel on my list that doesn't do Xmas lunch, could potentially go to the Balmoral for Xmas lunch. So far that is as far as I've got.

It would be great if you could share somewhere you've stayed that is amazing.

Crieff Hydro, Peebles Hydro, Gleneagles if you're on a Balmoral Hotel type budget.
Which Edinburgh hotel is on your list?

GradGirl · 08/08/2024 12:21

Thanks, I've never fancied the Hydros. Gleneagles is £7,500 for the festive break which is more than the Balmoral.

Budget £3,000 per room/for 2.

Cameron House
Stobo Castle

GradGirl · 08/08/2024 14:25

@MiddleAgedDread have you stayed at any of the places you’ve mentioned? Thanks.

No, just throwing some ideas out!

Mar Hall nr Bishopton/Erskine is lovely.

Bit further but the Fairmont and Old Course at St Andrews are both good.

The Swan and the Lakeside at the bottom of Lake Windermere are both lovely too, if you fancy staying closer to home.

GradGirl · 08/08/2024 15:19

Thanks, I’ll look those up.

We don’t want to be in the lakes as we’ve been to the Gilpin twice this year.

Celtic manor? Not sure on budget though, I've only gone with work.

Tallisker · 08/08/2024 15:59

Fonab Castle in Perthshire, but it's a bit further away, more like five hours

GradGirl · 08/08/2024 16:08

Thank you, Celtic Manor looks a bit corporate for me at Christmas.

We've been to Fonab twice before, it is the sort of place we love though so definitely somewhere on those lines.

I suppose I'm after smallish, personal, 4* plus, not too stuffy, not too corporate.

I've looked at a lot of reviews of Stobo which are mixed, some mention feeling like you're on a conveyor belt which I wouldn't want. I remember looking at it before and discounted it.

I went to Mar Hall spa last year and it was terrible. Genuinely appalling. Granted, it has been taken over by new management since then so perhaps you've been more recently and had a better experience. Worth seeing what upgrades have been made before I'd consider it.

Bowfield Country Club & Spa in Bishopton, Renfrewshire (near Glasgow) is lovely. I booked one of their beautiful lodges this Spring, with private hot tubs and a couple days' of treatments, Really enjoyed it. We are considering doing the same again this December, actually. Blythswood Hotel Spa in Glasgow is also very nice. Hotels in Glasgow Scotland | Kimpton Blythswood Square

Schloss Roxburghe Hotel & Spa is on my consideration list for for December also. I haven't been, but it looks beautiful. Spa Hotel Scottish Borders | SCHLOSS Roxburghe Hotel - SPA (schlosshotel-roxburghe.com)

I'm actually going there in September @Witchbitch20, never been before so I am pleased to hear that you liked it! ETA I've booked a superior lake view room as I really wanted the views.

@EternallyIrked thank you, I will look at them when I'm on my laptop.

Does it have to be that far? Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey is wonderful for Christmas and I would imagine Grantley Hall in Ripon would be amazing.

Witchbitch20 · 08/08/2024 16:38

Oh lovely @GradGirl ! I hope you get a dry crisp September to see it at its best.

Celtic Manor is very over commercialised so I’d avoid.

Have a great time in September and wherever you find.

GradGirl · 08/08/2024 16:40

Yes it does @Danniotley . Those two places are in my backyard, somewhere I go to meet friends for a drink/lunch/spa afternoon.

I know you said not England but look at Buxton crescent. I'm hoping to go for new year having not made it last year. I haven't checked their offer but last year was good and in your budget with change

GradGirl · 08/08/2024 17:05

Thanks, we definitely want to go to Wales or Scotland.

Cameron House, as already mentioned, is worth a look.
