Just me going, I need to be based somewhere where the drive to it doesn’t involve very narrow roads and reversing up hills (!) and I can walk, relax and read, have nice coffees, eat lovely ice cream and see beautiful scenery. Any suggestions?

Oooh, I see this place by Dawlish Warren stocks Baboo Gelato! And the cakes in the cafe seem very cheap! forestfungi.co.uk/the-menu/

Thank you all so much - booked near Dawlish and have lots of ideas for next time. I have ordered a million books to take with me.

It's a beautiful part of the world! If you go to the Warren there is also an amazing pasty shop, just before the railway bridge. The Portuguese Tarts, minted lamb pasty and traditional steak pasty are firm favourites here.

A pasty, a tart and an ice cream is a perfect supper 😁

No idea where you are based but for next time consider North Norfolk coast for nature reserves, beautiful beaches, seals, lovely gelato companies, Cromer crabs (best in the UK) .
Or, go in December or February (the whole county closes for January!) to Cromer but drive round to Horsey gap to see thousands of seals on the beach while the pups grow enough to swim independently.

@LegendInMyOwnLunchtime Weston beach (near Salcombe Regis) and Big Wellington beach (inaccessible from Sidmouth but in touching distance) I think are the two I came across. I was coming at them from the coast path so just sort of happened upon them.

Starting with the ice cream, I would go anywhere that sells Baboo https://baboogelato.com

Made in Dorset and distributed locally, what about Lyme Regis? Kiosk at each end of the beach. Or the tiny village with nice beach at nearby Seatown where the Anchor Pub has a Baboo kiosk outside? Or the delightful village of Beer? All have wonderful cliff walks with fantastic scenery.

This! We stayed in West Bay a few years ago and this ice-cream is playing a very large part in me wanting to return to that area. Never before had I had such good ice cream. The only negative is that no other ice cream will ever live up to this one and you'll be forever disappointed with ice cream until you return to that area.
