Edinburgh - birthday meal advice

My husband is 60 this year and he wants to go to Edinburgh for a couple of days over his birthday.

I want to take him out for a nice meal.
I have looked at the Witchery - it's a bit pricey!

Can anyone advise?

We’ve been and it’s worth the expense, in my opinion. Nowhere else in Edinburgh compares.

Go at lunchtime rather than in the evening, it's a lot cheaper.

I would struggle to advise somewhere nicer than The Witchery.
You do need to book well in advance though

What's your budget roughly and what kind of food do you like? Aizle is the best meal I've had in Edinburgh but Wedgewood is also lovely and I've heard good things about Forage and Chatter and Blonde although I've never actually been to those. Personally I find the Witchery overly fussy in the service and too formal but thata just my opinion! (And it's definitely a beautiful setting!)

I love Martin Wishart in Leith - the tasting menu is perfect for a special occasion.

Thank you for all of your ideas!

I think the Witchery might be too fussy ( pricey!) for DH.... he is 'careful' when it comes to spending money on himself!
Also we are not formal folk - DH still looks like a late 1970s roadie.... think hair and beard. We are going away to avoid having a party... he hates being the centre of attention.

I am going to look at your suggestions- so again thank you all

Haven't been for a while, but I loved The Lookout at the top of Calton Hill. It wasn't formal, the food and service was great and (as long as it isn't chucking it down) the view over the city is spectacular

Scran & scallie in Stockbridge might work, it’s very informal, more gastropub than stuffy restaurant but great food and very generous portions.

I've been to Forage and Chatter and had a really lovely meal, I'd definitely recommend it.

Yes, I've been there, it's perfect for great food in an informal environment.

How about six by nico - not really formal but a great experience

ColinRobinsonsFart · 19/06/2024 22:28

Scran and Scallie looks just the job!

It is similar to a couple of local gastropubs he likes.
