A few hours from Manchester

Hi, I'm looking for a short break anytime the week commencing 1st July for around 3 nights.

It has to be accessible by public transport and I'm looking for either coast or country.

My budget is really quite limited so the cheaper the better.

I don't mind where I stay, a hotel, caravan, chalet, boat...

Any suggestions please?

I'd look up at Northumberland, it's fairly cheap generally. Look at National express or similar to save money too

You can get to Filey on the train in just over 2 hours. There’s accommodation for all budgets and plenty of lovely walks (e.g. to Scarborough or Cayton Bay). If you don’t fancy walking, it’s got very good transport links.
Another good option would be Bakewell in the Peak District which is doable from Manchester in under 2 hours.

North wales coast - plenty of caravan parks along the way

Berwick. The haven site there is about 5 mins walk from the train station. Gorgeous views, plenty to do in the town. One change on the train from Manchester
