Areas to live in Manchester

Having grown up in West London both DH and I like the suburban city life and are looking to explore Manchester as a potential place to settle down in. Budget is about £450-£550 for 3 to 4 beds. Looking for areas that will offer:

Walkable local amenities (supermarkets, gyms, schools, after school clubs, coffee shops)

A train station or good transport links to the city (driving okay too unless traffic is bad)

Good sense of community (local events, independent restaurants/cafes, things with children)

Parks, playgrounds, green spaces

Would really appreciate any advice as feeling overwhelmed with where to start. Would like to narrow down some areas and start planning weekends away to visit them but really not sure where to start. We have a 5 and 3 year old if helpful to know.

Thank you!

Stretford: good transport links, lots of parks, good schools
Edges of Chorlton: similar
Whalley Range: more house for your money, but transport links not as good
Northenden: as Whalley Range

This one is near a park and decent school.

Monton, Worsley, Prestwich

This one probably somewhat better area than one above, close to tram, close to huge park. Grammar school area. Slightly busy road.

Have you though about Altrincham - technically Cheshire but in Trafford and has all those things

cookiegardencat · 08/06/2024 10:59

for that sort of budget you might want to look south manchester way, chorlton, urmston, Sale, the Heatons (heaton Chapel/more)

you could possibly look Altrincham and didsbury but budget won't go as far.

monton/worsley in salford are lovely areas too and tick many of your boxes but possibly less choice of good schools.

Prestwich also nice too and will get more for money.

You could get a small house in Didsbury or something larger in stretford or sale.

Do any of these places have a strong sense of community? Local events on for children? I’m also not wanting a very busy sort of place for the day to day things 😬

They're all suburbs of Manchester and Salford. If you want smaller look at the towns and villages on the Greater Manchester/Derbyshire border such as Marple, Disley, New Mills.

I would suggest stay in your chosen area for a week, and try to do the school run and work commute etc.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/06/2024 14:54

I think your requirements for walkable to local amenities, good transport links into the city centre etc are a conflicting requirement with "I’m also not wanting a very busy sort of place for the day to day things".
Also, contrary to the MN belief that "it's cheap up north", £550k does not buy you much family sized home close to a metrolink station in the suburbs of South Manchester. I think you need to get your feet on the ground with a weekend in the area to do some in-person research and get a feel for areas.

I think you want Poynton. It is just into Cheshire but with great train links into Manchester.

It is really on the outskirts of Manchester but has a real villagey feel. Good schools decent local shops etc
