Staying in a youth hostel in Edinburgh, mad or not?

Hello all I'm off to Edinburgh next year for my hobby for a couple of nights. Looking at hotels and airbnb it's incredibly expensive and then some
I've found a youth hostel that has single en-suite rooms that is reasonably priced, will I hate it? As long as it's clean and safe and not full of really noisy people I'm fine. I'm not expecting luxury just a good base for exploring the city

Mad in August, fine the rest of the year.

Where is it? If near Cowgate it is party and student central, so no peaceful night's sleep! Student halls offer ensuite self catering during the vacations at relatively reasonable rates.

The Premier Inn near the zoo is a short bus ride away from the centre and likely to be cheaper than a city central one, ditto the hotels near the airport.

When DD and I stayed during the summer we stayed at university Halls which were cheap and cheerful.

It's in feb next year it's in Haddington Place
I thought it would be a cool way to see the city and meet other people
But then I remember I am a grumpy, anxiety driven menopausal anti social bag most of the time so not sure if I'm delusional

Do it, you only live once and if you hate it you'll know for next time.
Just take some noise cancelling headphones and ear plugs.

It is on the tram route and a fairly busy road but otherwise a reasonable location.

We stayed at the Premier Inn by the station

Thanks for your messages everyone even Travelodge is horrendously expensive
I've decided to go for it and book it, it will be a new adventure and completely agree about the noise cancelling headphones. Last time I stayed in a youth hostel I was about 15 and it looks like things have moved on since then (I hope)

That part of the city can be quite 'lively' , but February maybe less so. Weeknight or weekend?

I'm mid 30s and I wouldn't do it!

Wowzel · 30/04/2024 18:31

I've done it twice in Edinburgh and it was fine

Peonies12 · 30/04/2024 18:54

I stay in the youth hostel by St Pancras in London quite often, in a shared room. It’s fine, just take ear plugs

If it's a private room in the SYHA hostel then it should be fine. There's some hostels in Edinburgh that I definitely wouldn't stay in but that seems ok and it's in a good location for exploring the city.
