Holiday home/cottage in the UK?

Hi all. Usually we go over to Ireland every summer to see my dad, and hire a cottage so that he gets a bit of a holiday too. This year, however, he is coming to the UK for a week in August and we would like to hire a cottage somewhere pretty, with things to do nearby, but I have no idea where would be best to stay? It will be my dad, me and DH, my sister and 3 yr old DS. Somewhere picturesque /with good views or surrounding countryside, would be great. A nearby village with a pub/shop would be good, too. Beaches within driving distance an advantage. preferably England, as don't want a ridiculous journey from London (although Scottish Highlands has always tempted me!)

The UK is my oyster! Advise me, please, good people of MN.

here?

I know someone that uses these regularly but I appreciate they may be a bit far?

scotland yet again

you don't need to go highlands for brilliant scottish scenery - the ayrshire coast is stunning too

right, enough from the Dizzy Scottish Tourist Board

here... Walking distance to Chipping Camden and beautiful surrounding countryside etc

MrsMattie · 01/04/2008 08:11

Gloucestershire is very tempting. I'd thought the Cotswolds might be nice, too....

Fowey area, near St Austell in Cornwall is one of my favourite places. We had a fantastic holiday there a few years back with my parents and my DB and his kids. We hired seperate cottages so we could escape from each other sometimes. Beautiful place.

How about Lake District ? Similar (and better imho) scenery to the highlands. West Lakes not far from coast here

Fowey is beautiful by the way
