Which are the nicest YOUTH HOSTELS in the Lake District?

We've just had a fab week on Windermere, and have good intentions to spend more time in the Lakes this summer and thought we'd try a few youth hostels.

We don't want the really remote ones (that don't even have a road!) - but somewhere you can walk from the door, preferably right near a lake too would be ideal.

Buttermere looks lovely.

I think there's one in Ambleside, which is ok, but haven't stayed there.

We stayed at an independant YH in Grasmere or nr Grasmere last year. If you search on Grasmere independant YH on google it comes up. Very nice, clean, big, easy reach of other places. Lovely. Small outside are for BBQs etc - though not a lot of room for kids to run around, but otherwise fab.

I've been where this youth hostel is and it's really amazing - the breath taking views - really worth a visit even if you don't stay there.

Borrowdale is back from the main valley road and in an idyllic setting on the Derwent. Great walking up and down the valley and about 1.5 miles from the head of Derwentwater
I believe the one nearer to Keswick (not the one IN the town) has been done up big-time and is now extremely family-friendly. It's on the main road, but has big sloping gardens and backs on to the lane up to Watendlath.

They are all lovely! We particularly like Wastwater and Hawkshead. Not so keen on Ambleside - usually overrun with large groups but fab location. Black sail our most favourite but you have to walk there.

Black Sail
It has been six years since we last walked round Ennerdale Water

Maybe we'll just do our own survey and try them all
