Hi, I am considering a night near Leicester with three children (12, 9 and 7). Was thinking of activities for two days, maybe Space Centre but can't find any inspiration for a second day. Is this a good idea? Is Leicester a good place for a UK city break? Could be things nearby as we will be driving so not limited to city centre. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Bradgate Park is outside Leicester, but it's lovely.

Space Centre isn't all that great imho! Though it's years since I have been, so maybe it has improved.

Thanks, I will take a look. It's a bit random and only thinking of Leicester really as I found a hotel with a room for all five of us. Never really considered it as a destination before - which may be unfair.

In and around Leicester you have:

  • Leicester outdoor pursuits centre
  • Twycross zoo
  • Alton Towers
  • space centre and right across the road is Abbey pumping station
  • The Curve theatre, DeMontfort Hall, Sue Townsend Theatre, Y Theatre, Phoenix Independent Cinema
  • Conkers
  • Social Climbing (Climbing wall)

Thanks @FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain , that’s a great list. I will research those places.

My kids really enjoyed the Space Centre at around those ages - we did as adults too. You’re also not far from Warwick Castle, Coventry (swimming pool with big flumes is great), so lots to do if you expand your search a little outside Leicester itself.

Abbey pumping museum is great, actually. Well worth a visit.

Richard III visitor centre

Space centre is good - as I far as I remember your ticket is an annual pass. They have various events throughout the year.

Retro computer museum (not in city centre and only open on weekends but a great place)

Leicester Outdoor Pursuit Centre

Leicester Musuem & Art Gallery (great interactive section)

Bradgate Park

Abbey Park

Guildford Museum

As others mentioned, there are theatres and event spaces which have various shows.

LOVED the Space centre though it was a few years ago.

Despite thinking that Richard III definitely did murder his nephews and that Philippa Langley is a bit 'out there', I would be making a beeline for the Richard III visitor centre.

Thanks everyone, sounds like lots of things that could occupy us. Looking at the hotel I found, it’s actually about halfway between Coventry and Leicester so wondering how the two compare? The two older children love history so would definitely like the Richard III centre but the youngest not so much. It’s so hard trying to please multiple children of different ages isn’t it?!
