Like Whitby or York but in North Wales?

Is there anywhere in North Wales similar to either Whitby or York? Where there are quirky shops and architecture to walk around and just shop and while away a few hours? Even better if little paid experiences like upside down houses, optical illusion museums, mini golf etc but not as commercial as places like Rhyl

Conwy or Beaumaris could fit the bill.
Harlech or Criccieth too.

I've not been to Wales for years but we used to go to Conwy, it has a whitby feel about it.

Conwy is lovely. The castle is fab and there are boat trips. Fab ice cream but restaurants are not great though.

Chester is a Roman city like York with museums, wall walks, amphitheatre, river etc

I like Caernarfon - the castle is fab and the town has nice shops - although it’s not huge. Not that far to go to Portmeirion which is well worth a visit. Also near the FForest rollercoaster which is really fun.

Not Wales but Chester?

Carnarvon is good for a mooch but it's not York.

Nothing really the same as Whitby but Conwy is really nice, it still has a traditional toy shop. llandudno has a much better choice of eating places as its much bigger.

Bangor has a lovely cathedral - an interesting university city often overlooked!
