Ideas for a short UK break by train

Any suggestions for somewhere with scenic areas to walk in, but that can be easily reached by train?

I'd be travelling solo from Glasgow, and would ideally like to stay in a hotel that also has spa facilities and treatments.

Just looking for a 2/3 night trip away to relax and get a change of scenery.

York might suit you - easily reachable by train from Glasgow, lovely old city to walk around, including independent shops; and if you wanted countryside as well, plenty of local train trips you could take while you were there. Harrogate and Knaresborough are a stone's throw away and also very scenic. I can't recommend a hotel as I'm too nearby to have needed one but there'll be plenty of choice in York.

Thanks for this.

It certainly looks easy enough by train.

I'm going to do some pricing and digging!

Chester? Direct train from Glasgow to Crewe, change there for a short train ride to Chester. Attractive city - the rows, walk the walls, cathedral, Roman amphitheatre.

Lancaster? York?

If you can get the LNER down from Edinburgh, the scenery on route is amazing around the Berwick area - try to get a seat on the left of the train going down and vice versa.

What about Newcastle? Easy to reach by train, and the station is right in the centre of town. Lots to see and do in town, galleries and museums, theatre and cinema, some nice shops and plenty of choice of restaurants.
For walks, you could take a short train ride to the coast for walks along lovely beaches, or the parks such as Jesmond Dene are easily reached.
I can't recommend a hotel, but there is sure to be something that has a spa etc.

Closer to home, Seamill Hydro Hotel in West Kilbride? Lovely coast round there.

Mull and Iona Spa Hotel....catch the train to Oban, go over to Craignure as a foot passenger. The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the ferry terminal.
