Thinking of maybe booking it but for 5 folk it's £157 for half an hour?! Does anyone recommend it and are there any discounts or good alternatives to see the view? Thanks!

Climb the monument building! £6 adult less for children

Agree with that. Really loved the Monument.
You can get a ticket for the Monument and Tower Bridge combined (I think) and Tower Bridge has a "partly glass" walkway. Could Imagine the Teens would like that.

South Bank is lovely to walk along - and once you see the Queues for the London Eye, you won't mind so much not going on there.

While you're at the South Bank, go into the National Theatre, you can go up a few floors and there are nice views from there.

Also Royal Festival Hall, again go up to the top floor and there is a balcony.

For the Teens, have a Look at Leake Street which is nearby and a Graffiti Tunnel

(And if you're hungry, when you come out of the Graffiti Tunnel, turn left. The road is called Lower Marsh and on your left there's Marie's cafe. Looks unassuming but has Great Thai food)

We did the Eye several years ago when you could book a champagne flight. It was limited to eight people in the gondola, along with a Pommery sommelier and his assistant. We had a lesson in the production of champagne and a tasting of five different ones including a vintage. Plus little snacks.

It was great fun. I don't know the cost as my partner arranged it but whatever it was, we agreed it was worthwhile. An entire hour going round enjoying the view and quaffing very good wine. The other people were fun and congenial.

We didn't have to queue and got use of the "VIP lounge" on shore ahead of and after the excursion.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear that this experience is offered any longer.
