Looking for a hotel/B&B, inexpensive but walking distance from railway station and safe to walk about nearby at night.

How about the YHA Hostel on Tenison Road? That's near the station.

That's a good suggestion, you would be very close to Mill Road which has lots of great places to eat.

There’s a Travelodge just over the bridge on Hills Road. Opposite the train station there’s the Clayton hotel but is quite expensive. I know there’s quite a few B&B/guest houses on Tension Road (Fenners Hotel, The Orlando, A&B guest house)

I stayed here a few years ago - Holiday Inn Express Cambridge - but during the summer. It is a little walk from the town centre and part of that walk is a pathway by the side of a lake. But it was clean, good size room, breakfast was fine.

It's fairly safe to walk around most of central Cambridge.

The Travelodge on Hills Road is fairly near the station.

There is an ibis right next to the station. Easy walk to town centre or Mill Road for food. Agree with pp that most of Cambridge is fine at night.

There's a beautiful Airbnb above the Cambridge Farmers Outlet on the corner of Lensfield road and Hills road, I've stayed there before on my own. 5 mins to the station.
