Road accident when on duty, what to do?

My cousin works for the NHS as a van driver. Last week, his van was hit by another van. My cousin was not at fault. Due to the crash, my cousin now has severe backpain. He has not visited a doctor yet(GP appointment full, not severe enough for A&E). What would be best for him to claim compensation, because it seems he now has to go private for physiotherapy/ chriopractor/ accupuncture or anything to help him relieve pain. He has been off sick for a week now. Will his employer (NHS) be able to help him in any way?

He needs to see a GP / out of hours first and get it on his record - this will be needed to make a claim

If it happened while he was at work, they should have made a note in the accident records and made sure he was seen by somebody
