Fancy but affordable hotels in London

I'm planning a solo trip to London in January. Just to mooch, go to museums, wander, art galleries etc. This is a massive treat for me so I'm looking for a hotel that fits this criteria...
Bit fancy but doesn't have to be 4*
Affordable preferably under £300 per night
Prefer older style to modern
Has a nice restaurant for dinner..
Don't mind which area, happy to travel on the tube..
Any recommendations or hidden gems please?

We recently stayed in the Meliá collection Kensington. Not extremely posh, but very lovely. Great rooms and nice touches. Great location on Gloucester Road, close to the tube and museums. Also close to Kensington gardens and high street.
