Paying with phone on London Underground

Help me out please - I'm not good at this stuff!

I've set up a card in my Apple wallet with Express travel - it says I can pay for travel on the tube using my phone. I'm travelling to London soon and don't want to make a tit of myself - do I literally just hold my phone over the yellow thing at the barrier? Or do I need to have the wallet app open?

How do you usually pay with Apple Pay? It’s the same!

If you’ve selected the travel option you just hold it over the scanner. Every so many journeys it will ask you for the passcode but it only takes a few seconds

Yes, that's all there is to it.

Thanks all, because it's a specific setting I'd assumed it was a bit different from using Apple Pay (which I still struggle with tbh!)

Enjoy your trip, op 😊

The chip used by Apple Pay is at the top of your phone (at least if you have an iPhone it is, I assume Samsungs are similar) so hold the top edge to the big yellow pad.
