We (me, DH and DCs aged 15 and 16) will be staying in London for 2 nights near the Tate Modern.

DCs aren’t fussy eaters and enjoy most cuisines.
Need some recommendations for funky yet not too expensive restaurants. Want to try and steer clear of chains.
They love Wagamama’s and Wahaca.

There’s a Wagamama just round the corner.

stealthninjamum · 28/07/2023 16:54

There’s a Tas pide near there that does lovely Turkish food, they specialise in pizzas.

its also close to Borough Market where you can pick up some good street food.

MrsApplepants · 28/07/2023 16:54

Caravan

nancy75 · 28/07/2023 16:55

It’s 10 minutes walk to borough market, there are loads & loads of restaurants in the area

EmmaPaella · 28/07/2023 16:55

There's a Wahaca on the Southbank, I think?

Hobbes8 · 28/07/2023 16:56

There’s lots of all those types of chains all along South Bank.

Gourmet Pizza Company at Gabriel’s Wharf (between Blackfriars Bridge and South Bank centre) is good, and there’s a few little shops and bars round there.

Lots of foodier places near Borough Market and some nice places on The Cut between Southwark and Waterloo stations. Tas is nice and has branches in both of the locations.

It’s ages since I worked round there but it’s a fab part of London. You’ll be spoilt for choice.

nancy75 · 28/07/2023 17:05

bao or tonkotsu instead of Wagamama

el pastor - my favourite Mexican but there are loads
Best thing to do think of a cuisine & google that near borough market - it’s the kind of place you couid eat out every day for a year & not go to every restaurant!

BaconAndAvocado · 28/07/2023 17:05

Sorry if I didn't make it clear.

I'm trying to avoid chains like Wagamama and Wahaca but they're just examples of what kind of foods they like,

I've been to Borough Market, isn't that stalls rather than restaurants?

There’s loads of restaurants down the high street. It’s just a generally foodie sort of area. Lots of pop up places too.

nancy75 · 28/07/2023 17:08

There are restaurants all around the market & nearby streets

nancy75 · 28/07/2023 17:12

Also look at flat iron square & vinegar yard (although that’s outside eating so it needs to stop raining)

SaltedCaramelPopcorn · 28/07/2023 17:14

Ev in Isabella Street is a great Turkish restaurant with fab outside space is the weathers ok

Hbh17 · 28/07/2023 17:22

Swan at the Globe is lovely, and pretty much next door to Tate Modern.

Yarnorama · 28/07/2023 18:02

It's about a 10 minute walk, but I highly recommend Paladar, latin American tapas style food, on London Road.

Lots more hot food stalls there now, so much choice - but also lots of excellent restaurants too.
If you're foodies, go there.
I live near 15 mins from the tate modern, and I work in food, and it's where I'd go...

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 28/07/2023 18:48

Sushi samba across the river!

BadgerFace · 28/07/2023 19:01

The restaurant I’m the Tate Modern is very nice!

Bunny2021 · 28/07/2023 19:14

Borough Market has build a street food area - so not restaurants per se but there’s areas to sit etc. there’s also a Bao and an El Pastor which are great. Wrights for seafood, Hawksmoor for steak, Padella for pasta.

BaconAndAvocado · 28/07/2023 19:49

Thanks all 💐

There are LOADS of restaurants round Borough Market now, plus along the low line. Bermondsey Street close by is super trendy and is full of places.

macshoto · 29/07/2023 18:40

Bar Douro (Portuguese) on Southwark Bridge Road is another good option.

Mars27 · 29/07/2023 19:14

I'd be heading to Borough Market, lots of stalls but also quite a few restaurants

boroughmarket.org.uk/traders/

Also a few restaurants in the area not on the Borough Market website themselves. I love going on Google maps and exploring the area to see food options in a specific area

Swan at the Globe is lovely, and pretty much next door to Tate Modern.

we had the best sunday lunch here, belly pork, wonderful food, ambience, view

tealgate · 29/07/2023 19:18

If you go to The Cut, there is a great tapas bar www.mesondonfelipe.co.uk/

There's also a Byron Burger, Rosa's Thai and a Flat Iron along with a Tas. Also a fairly basic Chinese cafe.

I’ve been meaning to try this place! Any recommendations from the menu?
