I want to take my recently widowed MIL away for a couple of days over October half-term. She's been a carer for the last 8 years so want to go somewhere luxurious so cost not a huge issue. It will be me, DH and 15y.o. DS plus MIL who is 81. MIL will be happy to be sat somewhere lovely with a book and a glass of wine but we need somewhere with at least some options for a sporty teenage boy. MIL mobile but not outdoorsy but won't mind if we go off and do stuff without her. MIL will want her own room but DS happy to share with us for a couple of nights. It will have to be within a couple of hours drive of Liverpool. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I was just about to recommend Carden Park as well! Beautiful hotel, spa and grounds for your mum to relax in and plenty of activities onsite for your child - my teen loved it!

What about Llandudno, lots to do around there and near by, dry ski slope and zipworld for teen and bodnor gardens, shopping in the town etc.

this is a lovely hotel with great food, and good for people watching if you have a room at the front.

I was going to suggest the Midland Grand in Morecambe. Fantastic location, great bar and restaurant and the Lake District on your doorstep.

What about ribby hall near Preston?
