Lunch in Covent Garden

I’m going to a matinee at the Royal Opera House by myself in July. I need lunch beforehand but I feel self-conscious eating alone (silly I know).
Where would people recommend? I eat anything except sushi.

I like fishworks which is opposite the opera house.

CurlewKate · 27/06/2023 13:13

Cafe Murano. Lovely food, very relaxed. Can I come too?

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 27/06/2023 13:15

I’ve been to Whahaca on my own before and it was fine. Great food

Loverofoxbowlakes · 27/06/2023 13:19

Don't bother with the Ivy, very gloomy and not at all as swanky as I had hoped.

BranchGold · 27/06/2023 13:21

Balthazar? It’s a big space so wouldn’t be noticeable you were dining alone if you want to blend in a bit.

Horizabel · 27/06/2023 13:22

What's your budget?

The Barbary and The Barbary Next Door in Neals Yard have fantastic modern Isreali food (Mediterranean/Middle Eastern/North African fusion). They also have bar style seating (some around the kitchen so you can amuse yourself watching the chefs) so it isn't obvious you are eating alone (because everyone is sitting in a row) if you feel self conscious about it!

The Petersham is also nice and has a lovely outside courtyard.

The Barbary | Covent Garden Restaurant | Neal's Yard | London

The Barbary is situated in the iconic Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden. The restaurant takes inspiration from the Barbary Coast, identified by 16th century Europeans as the area settled by the Berbers in the Atlas Mountains.

Cora Pearl on Henrietta Street has the nicest staff and very good food.

I actually really like the sandwich plate the ROH does in the Floral Hall - that and a glass of fizz. Never had any issues eating there alone, in fact there usually are a few people doing so who are there to grab a bite before a production.

CurlewKate · 27/06/2023 14:26

I want to have a lovely lunch by myself in Covent Garden and go to a
Matinee!!!!😢😢😢😢😢

ginislife · 27/06/2023 15:37

@Loverofoxbowlakes I agree. Service was terrible when I went 6 weeks ago. Food was nice but I wouldn't go again

MinnieMountain · 27/06/2023 16:11

Lots of lovely ideas which I will check properly when I’m not supposed to be working 😁

Budget is decent as it’s my birthday treat but not Michelin star.

The Golden Dragon has the best dim sum and the best people watching ever.

Rainbowshit · 27/06/2023 19:09

Balthazar.

MinnieMountain · 27/06/2023 20:34

I’ve booked the terrace at the ROH so I can immerse myself 😁
There’s some great ideas for another time though. I’ve made a list. The Barbary looks particularly good.

Seven Dials Food Hall. Perfect for eating solo and lots of choice for food.

AuntieDolly · 24/07/2023 20:59

Have you been yet?

MinnieMountain · 25/07/2023 06:22

I’m going on Sunday @AuntieDolly . I’m really looking forward to seeing Carlos Acosta’s 50th birthday show. I saw his 40th one too.
