One day in London what would you do?

Have adult Nephew for one day before he heads back to Oz. He’s not been to London since childhood. Will also have adult dc with me, we don’t live in London but visit regularly. Any ideas what would you do? He likes beer and heavy metal.

I don't think you're expected to like beer and metal just because he does are you? Anyway I would probably start at Camden market assuming it was a weekend so he can look at big clompy boots or whatever. Then I'd probably catch a bus or even do a bus tour tbh if he only has a day in London, and go down to the Tower of London, have a look at it from the outside, walk over tower bridge and then have a mosey down the south bank. That way you can see most of the sights but also stop for drinks, pop into the Tate, borough market etc. I'm lazy so would probs just do the south bank bit tbh.

Up to Camden, quick tour round the markets, then just leave him in the Dev for the day and go and go do something touristy.

Camden was my first thought or brick lane

Some of these suggestions are bonkers. I like gardening and cats but I don't expect to be taken to a world class city with a billion famous and interesting sites and history, and sent to the Museum of Cats (tm) and then deposited in a garden centre while my hosts sod off to do something more interesting.

I suspect he's interested in seeing the city and famous sites. Maybe a start by Buckingham Palace. Walk through St James Park to Admiralty Arch and then to Houses of Parliament. Cross Westminster Bridge. Wander east, stop for lunch by RFH. Go to a good trad pub for the afternoon or find a Brewdog or a microbrewery somewhere.

Hell you could ask him what he fancies?! I doubt Camden Market will make an appearance. It's truly truly dire. Even for clompy boot lovers.

Definitely do “the sights”. Buck Palace, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square etc. That to me is what makes London “London “.
Buy some cheesy souvenirs (toy of a red bus etc), try and find a pelican in St James Park, take a photo outside a red phone box etc.
The stuff sold at Camden Market is a lot of mass produced stuff bought from a warehouse.

Spinet · 21/06/2023 12:27

Yeah but Camden is famous for having had famous musicians drink there, etc, if that's likely to interest him. Otherwise I agree about the sights although Buckingham Palace is dead boring and a schlep to get to from anywhere so I would skip it unless any of you are staunch royalists or London mad (in which case he should probs spend more than a day passing through).

chemistnightmare · 21/06/2023 12:36

I would ask him to have a think and see what he fancies? There is so much to choose from and people always say Camden but I think it's pretty shit and wouldn't want to waste time on it if I was only there for a day.

TheCyclingGorilla · 21/06/2023 12:37

Do the main sites then Denmark Street and upper Charing Cross Road where the music shops are. It's a shame the Intrepid Fox closed down. Camden Town is also an excellent shout. The food outlets are nom.

Needmorelego · 21/06/2023 12:41

@Spinet if they do the typical tourist spots (parliament, Big Ben, trafalgar sq etc) then Buck Palace is just down the road - it’s all the same area. Hardly schlep to get to.

Spinet · 21/06/2023 12:43

I guess I'm just a lazy republican re: Buckingham Palace. I also think if you live in London and your nephew is visiting you might want to do something a bit more chill so you can spend time with him while still seeing the sights, which is why the South Bank would probably work. Camden if he likes.

Lollollol2020 · 21/06/2023 15:33

Thanks everyone. I like the sound of taking a boat and South Bank … might even tie in Borough Market (he likes cheese!). The beer reference was in case anyone knows any cool microbreweries.
