Staying in Whitby - things to do?

My partner and I are staying in Whitby for 2 nights shortly, and was wondering if you've been/live there, what do you like to do? Would love ideas such as places to eat, places to see, things to do. Thanks! Smile

Pizza West is somewhere we've been to twice. Great Pizzas!

Sirzy · 20/06/2023 20:18

For fish and chips Trenchers is by far the best we found

PaniniHead · 20/06/2023 20:19

Humble Pie

The castle ruins- Dracula based on it.
Be very, very careful of seagulls. They will wait for you to step out of a chip shop and dive bomb you for your food.

wildthingsinthenight · 20/06/2023 20:27

Yes the seagulls are thugs! Be careful.
Visit the Abbey ruins.
Mister Chips is an amazing restaurant. The name does not do it justice.
Trenchers also lovely.
Sherlock's for coffee and cake...the scones are out of this world.
Java coffee shop is fab
The Whitby deli is lovely .
You must buy treats from Botham's to take home!! It's a Whitby institution.

Enjoy. I love Whitby xxx

Go up the steps to the abby.
There's a shop that sells jet on the way to it.

LostMySocks · 20/06/2023 21:01

Crabbing in the harbour
The North Yorks Railway goes from Pickering to Whitby. You can walk along between some of the stations if you like hiking plus the line was used for the early Harry Potter films

There's a tiny little cafe in the old town area, near the market square, where you can get Whitby fatties, if you catch them open get some in an afternoon tea pack to take with you up the steps to the abbey, then sit and enjoy with the view.

Pannett park is really nice if you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle, the Whitby museum is great too if you're interested in maritime history or fossils.

Enjoy your trip, there's so much to do.

captain Cook museum

Orban · 20/06/2023 23:15

There's some really nice shops on Skinner Street.

Scousefab · 20/06/2023 23:20

Try and use the park and ride for parking it gets very busy. Nice places to eat- magpie, trenches, silver street and angel fisheries so many though are excellent! Agree the abbey is a lovely walk and there are boat rides too!
Bothams do nice cakes and the railway not to far away!!

justsaxy · 20/06/2023 23:24

Yes to crabbing!!! It's our favourite thing to do.

Orban · 20/06/2023 23:31

Yy also lots of fossils on the beach.

SkalengeckOrSiegbarste · 20/06/2023 23:37

Ghost walk if you can find one! I loved the spooky tales & interesting history.

TheGriffle · 20/06/2023 23:41

Hunt on the beach below the 199 steps for sea glass.

Walk round the old town and go in all the lovely shops, there’s a fab picture shop we’ve bought a few pieces from and Honeyz soap shop is lovely.

Im a sucker for Magpies cafe but not for their fish and chips but their ham chips and coleslaws, delicious.

Climb the steps and visit (St Mary’s?) church and the Abbey if you want to.

Take a boat ride round the harbour.

Have a trip into Scarborough.

Drive a little further down the coast to Sandsend, lovely little beach.

I mainly hunt for seaglass though. Could spend the whole 2 days doing that!

There's a brewery up by the Abbey that serves lovely pizza as well as beers, gins and soft drinks.

SallyWD · 21/06/2023 08:36

It's a short drive to Robin Hood's Vay which is very pretty and worth a stroll around

We usually walk there along the cinder track and get the bus back or vice versa.

WhatWouldHopperDo · 21/06/2023 09:04

Echo what a PP said about Bothams. Get a Chocolate Jap. Amazing!

Oh lovely, I'll do that next time.
And of course I meant Robin Hood's BAY.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 21/06/2023 09:07

Fabulous old cafe on Flowergate called Sherlocks. Usually has an old bike outside. Scones are arguably the best in the world.
