Norfolk folks! Rapid EV charging in North Norfolk

I’m planning a fairly long trip to that area and my range anxiety is kicking in! Before I book accommodation, is there a reliable rapid charger anywhere in the Holkham/Holt area or do I need to be nearer Norwich?

Id love holiday rentals to start putting these in as a standard - I’d go for that over a hot tub!

I’ve looked on Zap and there seems to be a Tesco in Aylsham but I get nervy in case one is unrealisable and I get stuck

Albert Street Holt

When we were in Sea Palling last year there were several at the Tesco in Aylsham (we commented on people just going to Aylsham to charge). One of the cottages let through the agency we booked through had an EV charger and I believe that a couple of the others were going to be putting them in. There is a whole EV station outside Norwich as well

For sure somewhere with a destination charger would be most convenient, although you can always take your granny cable and plug in if the place has an outside plug? I googled for any holiday cottage websites which specifically advertise places with an EV charger and came up with this: https://www.norfolkhideaways.co.uk/cottages-with-ev-charging. I'm sure there's another one that Jonathan from Eco Cars has mentioned, I'll have a look back some of his YouTube videos to see if I can find it.

Whereabouts are you coming from? I would get a decent charge at the Ionity in Peterborough before venturing into the wilderness, then it looks as if Fakenham has got that rarest of beasts, a working Geniepoint, plus an Osprey with two chargers. There's an Instavolt at Necton with 8 chargers which is likely to be more reliable.

Do you have any RFID cards? It's a good idea to have several when you're out in remote areas as often connectivity can be poor and RFID can be the only way to get a charge started. I can't see that being mentioned as a factor on any of the likely chargers in the area on Zap Map but it's a useful backup.

Aylsham looks dodgy to me, btw - in the chat for the BP Pulse charger, BP have commented an engineer has been called out. For the Podpoint in Tesco someone did manage to charge on CCS yesterday but lots of failures prior to that. The Podpoint app says it's working ...

Aylsham not near Holt/Holkham. There are points in kings lynn( near Holkham) and Holt. Most Tescos in area have them.

Whenwillitwork · 19/05/2023 19:31

Thanks all some good pointers here :)

We have an RFID card which has been refused recently - must sort that!

Ah yes it does look as if there are some type 2 chargers in Holt, but of course you would have to be extremely patient to recharge the car there. Good if you were going to be in Holt for the day, though. (Ditto the Tesco). Useful for top-ups but not for an 80% charge.

I just tried to get booked into a holiday park with some - sadly booked up. I’ll keep looking. I don’t fancy relying on something that’ll take all night 😬

Depending on which way you're coming in, the Tesla super-chargers at both Cambridge and Thetford are now open to non-Teslas. What kind of range does your car have? I assume it's not a Chademo? I would probably plan a couple of jaunts to, say, the Electric Forecourt in Norwich or the Instavolt at Necton but that depends on the car having enough range that it's worth driving out of your way to get a charge.

The Lincoln/ KL way
no not chamedo- CCS I think. Looking for fast ones really - I’ll look into the electric forecourt, thank you

Oh my word - the Electric Forecourt, it’s what EV dreams are made of!

OP posts:
tribpot · 20/05/2023 06:07

Oh yes indeed. And the Norwich Electric Forecourt is a more 'junior' version, the Braintree one is the mothership.

So there's a reasonable cluster of rapid chargers in King's Lynn, for preference I avoid two-charger sites as it's too likely there will be a queue but what can you do. Alas the super-charger there isn't open to the public yet but Tesla have opened up several in the last month so here's hoping.

Lund a house near Necton so that could be just the job. InstaVolt are fast and seem to be plenty of them :)
thank you all
