Stay on the train til it gets to liverpool street. When you get there, get a one day travelcard for zone 1 (5.30 for you, free for your DD). I would then just get regular buses around town.

Some attractions are 2 for the price of one if you have come by train, google 2 for 1.

Hi if you are getting off at Liverpool Street, you are probably best to get on the underground at that point and get the central line to Oxford Circus. Change onto the victoria line to Green Park which is nearest tube to Buckingham palace. When you're done you can walk from there across Westminster bridge to the London eye. If you actually want to go on the eye it would be best to book in advance to be on the safe side.

With regard to open top buses - I am not really sure where the best place is to pick one up being a Londoner, I've never been on one! I know some start at Baker Street tube station as I used to work there - but that's not really near the London eye. Hopefully someone else can help. Have a great day

On reading your OP again just realised that you could get off at Seven Sisters (think the Stanstead train stops there) and get the Victoria line straight from there to Green park - might be easier?

Come into Liverpool Street. Buy the zone 1 travelcard (as per Spicemonster). At Liverpool Street take the central line to St Paul's and go and see the cathedral. It really is the most fantastic place. From there take a normal commuter bus to the South Bank for the London Eye (not sure which numbers, am sure you can google it). St Paul's and London Eye are not too far apart and will give you lovely journey over Blackfriars Bridge across the Thames.

After London Eye you can walk back along the Thames Path towards London Bridge station. Loads of places to eat, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the Golden Hind, the London Dungeon, Borough Market, all around that SE1 area you really get a sense of how old London is (lots of back alleys etc).

Or, depending on time, you could go on a boat trip after the London Eye. Get a very good commentary, go under Tower Bridge and see Tower of London etc. A lot to do in one day but am sure you'll both enjoy it!

Aimsmum - from near Liverpool Street you can get a 15 bus to trafalgar square. this is one of the last Routemaster buses, and will cost £2, or 90p with on Oystercard (you can get this at the station). this is a lovely route through the City, just like the tourist buses do, but a tenth of the price.You can change at trafalgar square for a number 9 routemaster bus, which takes you to Buckingham Palace.

If you get a one day bus pass (£3.50) you can hop on and off to your heart's content.

When we did the london eye we combined it with a DuckTour - so got the bus trip and the boat trip in one.

if you are in the South Bank - don't forget to go up to the Oxo Tower FREE balcony on the top floor.... you get to see lovely views of London and the river!!

If you are doing the London Eye, the Aquarium is just about next door, it is pretty fab!

Check out lastminute.com for the eye - I got really reasonable tickets for the eye and a cruise on there.

The Tate Modern is worth a peep as well if you're on the South Bank - you can walk down from the London Eye then back over the Millenium 'wobbly' bridge to St Pauls. You can get a 23 from there to Liverpool St.

London Eye has a playground next to it, for letting off steam while you wait in the queue. Walking to London Bridge takes about 30 minutes, but you can walk over to the north bank on the Millennium Bridge. Great views from Waterloo Bridge too.

There are loads of nice restaurants in London that do a set lunch menu of less than a tenner for 2 courses.

If you want to go to Kensington, there are the Natural History, Science and Victoria & Albert Museums, and a half hour walk will take you to Kensington Gardens and the Princess of Wales playground, and Kensington Palace.

I have been taking children sightseeing around London for a long time, can you tell?!

I see the Duck tour a lot - you can catch it from the Eye and it looks fab.
