Nice but inexpensive hotel in Birmingham, ideally close to New Street Station?

Am spending one night there in April through work but being NHS they won't cover accommodation, or not much of it. Could anyone recommend somewhere, ideally where a single won't pay the same as a double room? Also anywhere more posh but where we might get a mid-week deal? Two of us happy to share but the third's a guy!

Like the look of City Inn but seems pricey...
Thanks.

Please does anyone have any ideas - I hate ending up somewhere not nice!? Am thinking maybe to leave it until week before and go for a late deal?

Days Inn in Mailbox ? City Inn is nice. try laterooms dot com

The Burlington is ok as well (very close to New St Station)

Avoid the Britannia (is very grim), as is the Copthorne

Oh - and try nite nite... little "pod" type rooms but quite cool and reasonably priced

Yes the Britannia is awful; I've never stayed there but had to go on a course there once and it made Travelodges look really classy (we often stay in Travelodges; they are fine and cheap and there should be plenty around Brum I would think).

There is a Holiday Inn in the very centre, just down the road from the station. I've not stayed there but have been to courses and events there and it's been fine.

The Burlington has a very nice bar, called the Bacchus bar, where all the suits go for after work drinks. The hotel always has a doorman, has a pleasant coffee shop type place and looks pretty civilised - no idea how much though.

malmaison is near the station i think, but unfortunately only fulfils one of your criteria....

Actually the Ibis is ok... Not exactly architecturally inspiring - but decent enough and about a 5 minute walk from the station...and inexpensive

Now need 2 single rooms unfortunately, female friend has dropped out and don't think DH would go for me sharing room with male friend....
