Hotel stay on my own

fatsatsuma · 27/03/2023 17:11

For reasons I can't go into here, I am able to go away for a night or two by myself to a hotel/spa. I don't have a problem being by myself, but wonder if anyone can recommend somewhere where I will feel comfortable eating by myself in the restaurant etc. Generous budget and this is a complete one-off so please hit me with your recommendations for somewhere really special - in England or Wales please. Bonus points for outdoor heated pool 🙂

My SIL goes to Bedruthan in Cornwall on her own every year and loves it. She stays in the single rooms to save money, but they’d don’t have sea views so if your budget is generous you could go for a much better room. My point is though, that they have single rooms!

You could stay in one of the spa rooms at Centrr Parcs, Elveden definitely has them and you get all day access to the spa with your own private entrance. We did it for a brief stay and the room was very nice.

Or York is a lovely city it's easy to walk around, can't recommend any hotels though I'm afraid.

I haven’t visited this hotel or spa but the little village of Helmsley is beautiful and it does have an outdoor heated pool. You could saunter a few hundred yards into the village and while away some time with a good book in one of the lovely cafes. Or for a change of scenery you could take a short 2 mile drive to try the Star at Harome. Again I haven’t visited this restaurant either but it also looks nice https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=spa+helmsley+yorkshire&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

Carden park near Chester. The spa is out of this world

Chilten Glenn is great for singles. About £400 a night it's lovely 😍

Thanks so much for all these replies - much appreciated! Off to look them all up.

Bedruthan Hotel has kids in it. Their sister hotel is the Scarlet if you want a child free option!

I second Rudding Park. I did just what you are planning a few weeks ago. I felt very comfortable alone in the restaurant. I even ate in Horto one night and had the 7 course tasting menu which was fabulous.

The spa is lovely but you do have to pay extra to use it. It isn't an outdoor pool you can swim in but a hydrotherapy pool. These is an indoor pool that is free to use

Lots to do around the area, Harrogate, York, Harlow Carr Gardens.

The staff were all so helpful and friendly.

I have stayed alone on occasional nights for work many years ago but hadn't stayed away for 4 nights before and dined alone. I loved it. No one else to please, just myself. I took my Kindle to read. I can't wait until I can do it again!

I do plan things in meticulous detail so that I feel comfortable.

Hope you find somewhere that you feel comfortable and enjoy it.

Schmutter · 27/03/2023 21:46

Chewton Glen is lovely and I don't think you'd feel remotely conspicuous there on your own.

mdh2020 · 27/03/2023 22:03

I used to travel on my own for work and loved being on my own. I often used room service and ate dinner in my pyjamas. Ragdale Hall Spa has a communal table for people on their own - you don’t have to sit at it for dinner but you can if you want .

I prefer completely optional group activities so would look for some of the special interest events at

Generous budget? Anywhere?
I'd go to the Newt in Somerset. Oh my god it was like paradise! Lovely spa and pools, and I believe they're adding an outdoor swimming lake too.
I'm saving to go back!

My in laws rave about this place. And they know a good hotel.

Madcats · 31/03/2023 16:49

I used a spend a fair few weeks away from home in hotels. I think it is less unusual for women to be travelling solo (be it for work or pleasure) than it was a couple if decades ago. Kindles/audiobooks can help with solo dining.

If you like horse-riding do have a look at Lucknam Park near Bath. Great food and great spa too.

It's a bit of a trek for me, but I keep meaning to take DD up to Another Place in the Lake District.
