Does Brighton still have lots of independent shops?

Just reading the threads about the town centres being grotty and shops all closed. Is this the same in Brighton? I have booked to visit in May mostly because I remember it having lots of quirky shops and nice places to eat. Is Brighton also dead?

No it's not dead! I've just moved there and although it's been a mixed bag in terms of experience one thing I have been pleasantly surprised by is how vibrant the retail / entertainment scene is. Western Road - the main Chain shopping street can be a bit scruffy in bits but the Lanes / North Lanes and Hove are all really buzzy. Hope that helps

Yes the North Laine is still vibrant and bustling and independent, south lanes are fancier, some indies and lots of very nice restaurants. Some parts are grotty - west street mainly, and it has got a slightly grubby air about it, but still fun and colorful.

Oh that's good to know! Yes it's the lanes I was thinking of.
