Takeaway recommendations off A1(M)/A1 South Yorkshire

I’ll be travelling with the kids south down the A1 next Friday evening and trying to find somewhere to stop for tea that will be more interesting than Ferrybridge services but won’t take too much time either.

Any recommendations for takeaways just off the A1, preferably somewhere between Ferrybridge and south Doncaster or maybe Retford? Hoping to be down that way some time between 5 and 6pm. We’ll need to eat in the car so need somewhere with parking nearby.

Food criteria:

  • veggie options for me
  • pescatarian options for DS (though he’s happy with veggie)
  • nothing too spicy for DD

Thank you!

(Just to add in case my username gives the wrong impression: takeaway is a rare treat for us rather than a regular occurrence!)

This might help…theextramile.guide/. We’ve used it for stops on the way up to the lakes.

There are OK diners on the A1 that are really nice. The menu is American Food. Not 100% sure where they are but there are a few.

My fav was always the american diner northbound.

But alas, i didn’t get off to go local and eat in the car, and i like meat. A lot. So probably my like is way off base for you, sorry.

There is an Urban burger just off J3 of the M18.

That won't be too far out.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/02/2023 07:59

My current go to while travelling is fish and chip shops, and there's one about a mile off J38 towards Doncaster (Franks). There may be others as there's quite a lot around when you look.

However, in Yorkshire, it's common to fry in beef dripping, so the hardest part would be to find one that doesn't do this for you as a vegetarian - I don't know how easy it would be to find one in the area that doesn't.

Or there's a Pret at Ferrybridge, so nicer than your average fast food etc.

No need for this.
Have a takeaway as often as you want/can afford. It’s nobody’s business.
Cant help with the takeaway bit really, my in laws live near Retford and we have never found a half decent one near there. The is a Costa in Retford though

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I’ll take a more detailed look later.

@BarbaraofSeville Chips cooked in dripping is common here in the NE too, and it’s hard to find out ahead of time which are and which aren’t! (I know from pre-veggie days how tasty dripping chips are too.)

Xscape is really close to Ferrybridge and has Burger King, Five Guys, Taco Bell but if you're wanting to stay on the A1 there is a McDonalds at Red House in Doncaster. Other than that I'm not sure. Someone mentioned an OK Diner and I do like them!

ChipsAndSweets · 12/02/2023 19:06

Thanks again for everyone’s ideas! Think we’re going to head to Xscape as it’s not too far out of the way, and not too far south so the kids hopefully won’t be moaning about being hungry an hour before we stop.
