Birthday day out within an hour of Reading

Looking for recommendations for a day out next week. It's my birthday and looking for ideas on somewhere nice to spend the day within an hours drive of Reading, Berkshire.
It will be mid week, for me, DP, DS21 and DD18. Just want a mooch about, lunch etc.
Not wanting the following as we go regularly -
Windsor
Marlow
Newbury
Sonning/Streatley
Pangbourne

I like large villages/small towns with some independent shops/coffee shops.

Any ideas welcome.

Thank you

Winchester is lovely.

Oxford?

2reefsin30knots · 29/12/2022 19:49

Henley?

ApplePippa · 29/12/2022 19:54

Henley

Or Bourton-on-the Water - might be a bit far though, depending on which side of Reading you are.

TellMeWhere · 29/12/2022 19:58

Oxford or Henley.

See if George Clooney will host you a private lunch on his estate? 😬

Slough?? 😅

Tree543 · 29/12/2022 20:00

Henley
Abingdon
Oxford

EnamelWoman · 29/12/2022 20:16

Wallingford

imadeitnice · 29/12/2022 20:32

Winchester and Oxford are both a bit too big. Both lovely places to visit though.

Henley, Bourton on the water and Wallingford are good suggestions.
I think I'll pass on Slough lol, not really what I had in mind Wink

Marlborough
Hungerford

EBearhug · 29/12/2022 20:38

No one suggesting Basingstoke? 😉

Whitchurch?

Jeffjefftyjeff · 29/12/2022 20:42

Marlborough
Cirencester

Ionacat · 29/12/2022 20:43

Odiham or Alresford

BraveMaeve · 29/12/2022 20:44

I think Cirencester would fit the bill. Lovely independent shops, cafes, restaurants and nice walks.

EspeciallyD · 29/12/2022 20:44

Cirencester is about an hour from Reading and lovely for a mooch around, lots of nice shops and cafes.

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/12/2022 20:52

Slough High St! 😆

Or maybe Bath? Is that within an hour? Love the place.

The village of Hambleden in the Chiltern's.
It's film-set pretty. Go for a walk and a pub lunch in the area.

Cliveden National Trust.

Bleinheim Palace and Woostock (cute Cotswold town).

Skullduggeryfizz · 29/12/2022 21:04

Guildford is a lovely town and amazing countryside

NyanBinaryJohn · 30/12/2022 01:12

Farnham is lovely, and also second Guildford. Winchester is also only a short train journey away.

Or of you want to stay really close: Wokingham.

imadeitnice · 30/12/2022 10:30

Thank you all.
Think we'll go for Cirencester or Guildford

I'd definitely choose Cirencester over Guildford. Guildford is bigger, a lot more traffic, parts of it are lovely but a lot of the shops are in a big modern indoor centre.
