My in-laws live there and are insistent that West Wight is the place to be! Compton is a lovely beach. Not sure about soft play areas etc - Blackgang Chine is a sort of old fashioned theme park but your DS might be a bit young.

hi i live on the lovely isle of wight ,there is a soft play place is called jolly rogers it is in newport there is also a soft play place called jungle jims at the sea front at sandown right by the beach, zoo and dinosaur museum , and a realllllly lovely kids farm called branstons farm just out side of newport,

west wight is very beautiful and rural, the east of the island - sandown, ryde, shanklin etc is busier and more seaside-town touristy. It's only a half an hour drive from one end of the island to the other though, so if you stayed west of the island, it's very easy to travel anywhere else.

There are many nice beaches all around the island, sandown and ryde are big and sandy, lot's of smaller ones else where.

There is also a soft play place Space Island just outside Sandown. Robin Hill is my recommended day out, Black Gang Chine, Colemans's animal farm, dinosaur ilse.

I would recomend Shanklin - very good beach for children (hire a beach hut -keep all your beach things in it each night and children love having camps in them if the weather is not brilliant). Also on the sea front in Shanklin is Jungle Jims an indoor play area and other amusements.)

Freshwater (on the West side) is our fave - took our dd's there last summer - aged 4 and 6 months.

Tbh, wherever you base yourself, there are many things accessible within half an hour or so.

Enjoy your holiday.
