Good "park and ride/train" options for travel into London?

Evening all

We're planning a few days in London after Christmas and had train tickets booked (Midlands) and planned to leave car at station. We're going from Rugby to Euston as it's half the price of other stations.

We've had an email to say our rail operator won't now be stopping at Euston on that day and when I try and look at journeys full stop from our station to Euston it's saying no journeys at all ... we're wondering if it's industrial action but can only see as far as November strikes on National Rail.

Sooooo we're looking at alternatives.

Are there any good options for a fairly straightforward journey to park up in a safe car park for three days then get a train into London?

Ideally not too far a drive from motorway and then a nice short walk to departure station .

I'd suggest Luton or Stansted airport. If booked in advance, the prices are fairly reasonable.
You can get train or even coach to central London, not Euston but easy to get a tube.
Haven't parked at Luton for ages but Stansted has many options.
The train to central London takes around half hour (fast train) to 4tmins (normal train).
Perhaps others will have better suggestions closer to London.
There are lots of towns within commuters belt, there normally are carparks next to the station, probably will be cheaper than airport parking.

Warwick Parkway and then train to Marylebone, if trains are running on that line?

St Albans

Try Leamington Spa to Marylebone as well.

Do you have Just Park app? You can pay a small amount to park in someone's driveway, or a reseved spot in a private car park. It's a genius idea - I use it whenever I have to park somewhere unfamiliar or expensive.

Ooh no, not heard of that, I'll take a look, thanks!

Park at Stratford Westfield. Parking is decently priced, there is always plenty of spaces, it's safe and it is just a short walk to the station.

I expect Euston will be closed for HS2 works, it’s quite a common engineering time of year.

CMOTDibbler · 06/11/2022 08:25

I've parked at Stratford International (but booked and paid for on YourParkingSpace) and it was very easy to get to and reasonably priced. But if it is just the Euston line having works done, we often use the Warwick Parkway line

UniversalTruth · 06/11/2022 08:25

Did the email give a different London station as the destination? Usually when there are engineering on our line into London they divert the trains elsewhere and it's easy enough to get across London. Maybe that's not the case for Euston though.

St Albans

I've done St Albans but prefer Luton as it's so much nearer the M1

Will you be on the M1 @tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz

I've parked at both Luton and Stansted in the past. Luton is handy because it's on the Thameslink so can often get straight to my destination instead of having to change at a mainline station, but it's a bit tedious right now because you have to get a shuttle bus from the airport to the station. A new fancy metro is 'imminent' (it's been imminent since before the pandemic) but it doesn't look as if there's any chance of it being open in time for your trip.

Stansted has the advantage of an onsite train service but is (for me) more hassle to get to.

We used to drive from Nuneaton to Edgeware tube station and park there.

If you're going to drive to Luton/St Albans etc, you might as well drive to outer London.

Morning all!

Yes Time we will.

I think we've decided it may be a faff to drive and park /train s as I'd add a fair bit of time each way compared to our original plan so we'll wait and see closer to the date what the score is then if need be rearrange for early in the new year.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions I'm going to keep this thread to come back to .
