Glasgow VS Edinburgh for museums and galleries?

Hi all, following my last thread re London I've decided to leave that trip until I have more time. Meanwhile I'm thinking Glasgow or Edinburgh would be more sensible for a couple of days. I'm really just wanting to see the galleries, museums, anything history/art related really.

Which is better for this, Glasgow or Edinburgh? Thank you!

It’s totally possible to stay in one, and visit the other for a day trip. The journey takes just under an hour by train.
Glasgow to me is museum city! The Council own many of them and they are free to access. It’s also marginally cheaper for everything from public transport, accommodation and restaurants.
Edinburgh would be easiest to do on a day trip because it has a snaller, more compact city centre. Most of the well-known sights that visitors want to see are close together in the middle of town so it's easy to experience them without having to go looking. The castle, the medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town are right there when you get off the train.

I agree that both are good. The galleries etc are possibly in a more contained area in edinburgh but it would be very easy to visits both cities in a long weekend.

Loved Edinburgh. Tons to do! Need to go back and do Glasgow next, or do a tour...

If you've never been then i'd do Edinburgh. The castle, National Museum, Royal Yacht Britannia and art galleries would easily fill a weekend. www.nationalgalleries.org/

The Burrell in Glasgow is world class. It is my favourite Scottish museum by a long way.

If you’ve never been to either I’d start in Edinburgh. It’s more contained so easier to do in a weekend. It’s also arguably a prettier/nicer city (although Glasgow is great too).

Both cities offer enough to keep you busy. I wouldn't bother with a day trip to the other.

Remember that it is dark by around 4pm in winter in Scotland.

I love both, but would say i prefer Glasgow. Kelvingrove, Burrell, McIntosh House across from the Hunterian at Glasgow uni, Greek Thomson national trust house in Cathcart, The Peoples Palace, Transport museum, The Govan Stones, Mural street art (favourite being thecartist Smug's painting of St Mungo. Also Cathedral and Museum of religious art next to it, as is the Royal Infirmary museum.

You won't be disappointed either way. National Museum and Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, Burrell, Kelvingrove and Transport Museum in Glasgow would be my top picks.
