Hotel recommendations in Newcastle please

I'm going to Newcastle by mysf in October for 2 nights. Where should I stay? My plan for my time is really just to wander around, read my book in a coffee shop, do some shopping. The stuff my husband and teenagers have no interest in.
So I'd like somewhere reasonably central, safe for walking home by myself in the dark, nice but not mega expensive. A swimming pool sort of thing would be nice but not essential.

I was on a business trip recently, stayed at the Station Hotel, right in the middle. If you want quiet, it's a huge old building with recently refurbished rooms and it was virtually soundproof. New bathroom. The breakfasts were excellent.

They have a spa in a converted shunting shed behind the hotel too.

The Crowne Plaza in Stephenson Quarter (near train station) has a pool

Hotel Indigo - near to the station and just a few minutes walk from the main centre. Nice rooms, great breakfast and some of the rooms have a balcony.

Not the Grey Street hotel. Lovely but Christ it was the noisiest hotel I have ever stayed in. People, taxis, police ALL night
