We'll be staying in Beggelert, Wales soon. Any recommendations for places to visit? Just two adults.

I've looked at Portmerion, and wondering if it's worth paying to go if anyone's been there.

Cricceth is lovely, as is porthmadoc

Ffestiniog railway can be a nice trip out too

Funf · 20/07/2022 20:31

Criccieth, Llanbedrog, Quarry Beach, Porth Dinellan, Morfa nefyn Harlech
Fantastic area. Portmerion I didn't feel was with the money
Some more ideas here

Take a walk through the Aberglaslyn gorge, and have an ice cream from Glaslyn cafe when you come back. They also make a good pizza.
Take the mountain railway to Rhyd Du and walk back through the forest (or the other way round) if they are making stops along the route now, they weren’t last summer due to Covid.
If you like a wild swim the pools up the Watkin path are absolutely beautiful (the path up to that point isn’t too challenging).
I thought Portmeirion was overpriced and looking run down when we went but this was during covid.
Beddgelert is just lovely, you’ll have a lovely time.

itrytomakemyway · 20/07/2022 20:35

I think Portmeirion is very pricey, although pretty there is not a lot there.

I love Porthmadog, Borth Y Gest, Betws Y Coes, Llanberis, Criccieth, Harlech, Barmouth (for a nice traditional day at the seaside), Caernarfon, Dinas Dinlle. If you are NT members then Penrhyn Castle and Plas Newydd are worth the drive.

A bit futher away and you get to Anglsey - Menai Bridge, Beaumaris are lovely. Too many fabulous beaches to list them all here!

weekendninja · 20/07/2022 20:36

Dinorwic quarry. It's a 30 or so minute drive from Beddgelert. A disused skate quarry with so much history and spectacular views. Visit the slate museum first and then walk up from there.

You're in for a treat OP and Beddgelert is a fantastic place to stay.

If you travel south you can pick up this route, we saw loads of Dolphins from the carpark in New Quay

Electric mountain at Llanberis was a really interesting tour, you go underground. Think it was free. Also went to a copper mine which was good, a slate museum.

are you near the zip wire and cave trampoline place? That’s new since I was last in the area so not sure whereabouts it is.

FlyingFlamingo · 20/07/2022 20:44

@QuebecBagnet Electric Mountain is no more unfortunately Sad

QuebecBagnet · 20/07/2022 20:44

This

www.zipworld.co.uk/adventures. The zip wire thing looks awesome, seen some YouTube videos.

Oh that’s so sad, was really interesting.. I was expecting to be bored shitless.

FlyingFlamingo · 20/07/2022 20:46

Well the mountain is obviously still there but the visitor centre has closed Grin

itrytomakemyway · 20/07/2022 20:46

Electric Mountain is closed. the slate museums in Llanberis are free and excellent. The lake is lovely.

Bounce Below and Zip World are great is you are feeling adventurous.

If you want to go even further afield then Conwy is lovely. Llandudno is a good, old ashoined seaside resort and the Great Orme has beautiful views, cable cars, a ski slope and ancient mines to explore.

Sirzy · 20/07/2022 20:48

In bedgert Caffi Colwyn is lovely

Lottie4 · 20/07/2022 20:50

Thanks for your quick replies.

FlyingFlamingo - we've actually already got Glaslyn earmarked for pizza😂. Hopefully we can fit icecream in as well!

I love Portmerion, I've been several times, although not recently. I don't know if it's still the case, but it used to be that if you booked for lunch at the hotel (which was amazing every time I've been), you got into the village free - worth a check.

Sirzy · 20/07/2022 20:51

And in cricceth Castle Chippy and then across to cadwallegers for ice cream

SwelegantParty · 20/07/2022 20:52

Another place worth going is Conwy Water Gardens - there's a pleasant walk round the lakes with some unusual wildlife, but the best bit is the Dutch Pancake House, which is amazing!

You can get a steam train to Caernarfon from Beddgelert. It really is a good base, this thread has made me want to return!

Ukholidaylover · 21/07/2022 13:06

We're (2 adults) recently stayed in North Wales and went to Bodnant Gardens, Penrhyn Castle & Portmerion. We absolutely loved all of them. Planning on going back next year we loved it so much, loving some of these ideas for us too!

ermagerdabear · 21/07/2022 13:13

Portmeirion is lovely, but quite expensive as there's not much to do there. If it's something you've always wanted to see (I was a big fan of The Prisoner), it's worth it, but if not, maybe not.

We've just got back from a N. Wales holiday, and we went to Conwy, Canaerfon and Harlech for the castles. Barmouth and Llandudno for the beach and the Pier is cool if you ignore the amusements and Abersoch is gorgeous and reminds me of Cornwall, especially if you get the sunny weather.

Hopeishere52 · 21/07/2022 13:20

llanberis is lovely, there is a train around the lake and the slate museum with old miners houses decorated and furnished for different periods of time ( that was all free last time we went) , Petes Eats is great for a casual meal and there are lots of cafes and little shops, all at the foot of Snowdonia. The journey from Beddgelert to Llanberis is lovely. Borth y gest near Porthmadog is really pretty little bay. Dolgellau is a lovely village to stop off as well , on the way to Barmouth. Portmerion is a lovely day out especially on a sunny day.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/07/2022 13:28

"Dolgellau is a lovely village to stop off as well , on the way to Barmouth."

Don't tell the people of Dolgellau (county town of Meirionnydd) that you consider it a village though.

Mumteedum · 21/07/2022 13:32

Harlech castle is fab and beautiful beach there too. V nice café.

There's a copper mine around where you are staying too. Visited a long time ago but was quite fun.

Osprey feeding station worth a stop.

Llanberis and the little railway around the lake is v chill.

It's beautiful up there. You can't go wrong really

Porth dinllaen is one of my favourite places in this area, you can do a beautiful walk all round the headland and get lunch at the beach.
The Zipwires are fantastic! Done them several times
The slate museum and Bounce Below are great

Hopeishere52 · 21/07/2022 16:04

@Gwenhwyfar
whoops sorry , no offence, it is a beautiful town…well worth a visit, the churches, coffee shops, gift shops and even the chip shop are really lovely, with lots of lovely places to walk.
