Where can I go alone for a short break in the UK?

I'm late 50s and would like a few days away.

Would be going alone but not averse to joining in with others to participate in having a go at some new activities. Pottery? Impromptu comedy? Wellbeing type things?

Or just somewhere I can wander around in a lovely environment.

Open to any suggestions.

Come and potter round Edinburgh on your own. Nothing beats taking your time to wandering down from the Castle towards Holyrood getting side tracked by shops, cafe's, museums, the wee closes and wynds off to the side, take a detour down Victoria Street to the Grassmarket (market usually running on Saturdays with street food and quirky stalls), up Candlemaker Row to Greyfriar's Kirk and it's kirkyard, not to mention Greyfriar's Bobby.

If you head down to the Botanic Gardens (put most botanic gardens into the shade) you can take in another market in Stockbridge on Sunday. Farmers Market this time, maybe some bits for a picnic.

We live here and I haven't finished seeing the National Museum of Scotland yet.

There is plenty to see and do in the city centre without a car or even bus (unless you have mobility issues) so it's tailor made for a potter. Much of the city centre is an attraction in itself (a big chunk is a UNESCO world heritage site).

I was going to suggest Edinburgh but if you want to come imminently then hotel prices go through the roof during the festivals in August (but that could be a reason to visit if you fancy some impromptu comedy) and the next week or two will probably be busy / pricey to The Open being on at St Andrews. But I agree, it's a great city for wandering.

York or Liverpool are my two favourite destinations on my own.

Edinburgh, similar age to you and I've been there alone. It was fabulous.

Do you like walking? Peak District, Matlock Bath
