I visited Liverpool recently and I loved it. I wanted to know of any towns/cities that are worth visiting for a day out near Manchester. I take the train so no more than 90 minutes from Manchester Victoria/Manchester Piccadilly. Thank you!

Chester is nice. Old Roman city, good shops, racecourse, river.

Chester, Sheffield, Leeds, Lancaster, Blackpool... list is endless really. What did you love about Liverpool, might help narrow down suggestions?

Take the Hope Valley line to Sheffield.

In Liverpool, I ate at the Duke Street Market and visited New Brighton Beach.

Chester, Buxton, Lancaster, Bury (tram not train), Knutsford, Nantwich. You can also get the train to Formby which has a beautiful National Trust managed nature reserve with red squirrels, sand dunes and a great beach.

Hebden Bridge is really nice - train from Manchester Vic. Saltaire is really interesting - same train but change at Bradford. Went to Buxton the other week for the first time in 20 years which was a lot better than I expected.

Get the tram to Bury, then hop on the East Lancs Railway (steam trains!) for a trip up the Irwell Valley to Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall :)

Liverpool is the best of all those cities. But Lancaster is still worth a visit. Lancaster Castle and Priory are beautiful.

Liverpool is hard to beat as so much to see and do in a small area, but I would try Chester or Liverpool again

Hebden Bridge is lovely but small only ever spend a couple of hours there, but still worth a visit, Howarth is nearby but its smaller again we went recently and a 60's festival was on it was great to do both places in the same day

Is Lancaster Castle free to visit?
