Lost property won't return my passport

Lost my passport last night coming home, between security and the plane (domestic flight). Called lost property & some kind soul did hand it in BUT I have to collect in person and within 7 days now that I'm 450 miles away & not due to go to my family up north again anytime soon. Home office rules.

Is that really the case or do I just suck up the £75 to replace the thing?

It make sense they need you to collect it in person, they wouldn’t want a complaint of it being lost in the post or being intercepted by the wrong person & used in any kind of fraud.

But passports are sent by post all the time, when you get a new one. It seems ridiculous to expect someone to do a 900 mile round trip.

How much wouid the trip cost? More than the replacement value, I'd guess....

I can see the point in needing collecting in person. It's a form of ID seeing you. You could be anyone requesting it be sent anywhere. Although the fact you knew it was lost is a pretty good form of ID......

It's not about the security of the post presumably it's to make sure that the passport actually belongs to the person claiming it.

When do you next need to use it? I'd guess that if you don't need it urgently, getting a replacement would be the easiest way forward.
