What can we do with a 9 yr old around Leeds/Wakefield?

We'll be staying in this area for 3 days - we'll have a car but will have spent a fair amount of time driving so would rather things relatively local (maybe within 45 min drive max).

Thinking of Snozone maybe but not sure what else? Mix of indoor/outdoor as weather can be iffy....

National Coal Mining Museum - you get to go underground with an ex miner as guide. It is SOOOOOO cool!

mammajustkilledagnat · 22/02/2022 09:20

If the weather is good, then the Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/02/2022 09:21

Yorkshire wildlife park (doncaster)
Also in Doncaster if its bad weather there is the Dome... swimming pool with waterside and an ice skating rink.

Was just coming to say this ^ Grin

Also Harewood House is lovely, often has events, and has a brilliant adventure playground.

Tropical World and Royal Armouries are worth a visit.

InDubiousBattle · 22/02/2022 09:26

Leeds has the Royal Armouries (you can get the water taxi from the train station), The City Museum and Tropical World. York is only 20 minutes away on the train an has the railway museum. The Yorkshire Sculpture park and wildlife park are good too.

Thanks all.
Unfortunately dp doesn't do well in dark enclosed spaces so might not be up for the mining....shame as I quite fancy it.

YSP is definitely on the list.
The hotel has a pool and we're coming from Centre Parcs so dd might be swum out.

In the past we did that place Eureka (?) but think dd might be a bit old for it now.

If she likes science there's Magma near Sheffield. It's been a few years since I went though...

AnnaMagnani · 22/02/2022 09:36

Yorkshire Sculpture Park, National Armouries Museum, Temple Newsam, Thackray Museum of Medicine, Kirkstall Abbey.

Had a great holiday there as there is so much to do.

Libertybear80 · 22/02/2022 09:38

The Royal Armouries definitely. There's Zip wire place at Temple Newsome. Tropical World. Escape- snowboarding etc.

NewYearNewMinty · 22/02/2022 09:38

National Media Museum in Bradford
Chocolate Experience in York

My neck of the woods, I live in between Leeds and Wakefield 😁

Animals

Lotherton is lovely, they've recently done up their animal enclosure too. Lots of nice grounds to walk around too, plus the house.

Tropical World in Roundhay, then can go on to the park.

Cannon Hall has a nice farm, plus there's the gardens and museum too.

Askham Bryan Wildlife is a bit further away but is really lovely for a day out.

Tropical Butterfly House in Sheffield is lovely, but a bit further away. You can feed a whole variety of animals too.

Museums

The Coal Mining Museum is really good.

Shibden Hall is lovely to walk around, plus there's the grounds and the park.

Abbey House Museum is a really lovely, underated museum. Victorian streets and shops downstairs and then childhood galleries upstairs.

Royal Armouries is great too

Magna in Rotherham is a bit further away but is great if they are in to science.

Other Attractions

Diggerland. I've never actually been but friends have enjoyed it!

Xscape. There's loads there, bowling, food places, skiing, climbing wall.

PhilofDelphia · 22/02/2022 09:42

Oh to add to Abbey House Museum - you can visit Kirkstall Abbey opposite too.

Restlessinthenorth · 22/02/2022 09:49

The "top secret" exhibition at the Science and media museum on Bradford is amazing, as is the wonderlab and retro games exhibition. You need to book in advance but it's all free. Highly recommend

dameofdilemma · 22/02/2022 10:06

Thanks all - some great recs here. A few we've been to before but lots we didn't know about.

@dameofdilemma 3 days is nowhere near enough.

I took DD to Yorkshire a few years ago and we did loads...going back this summer and we could could do different things every day and still have missed out.

ClariceQuiff · 22/02/2022 12:43

Keighley & Worth Valley heritage railway - Haworth is a good place to join as there are lots of cafes there. It includes Oakworth Station, of 'The Railway Children' fame.

The Piece Hall in Halifax
Samuel L Jackson was there recently filming the new Marvel Series
