Nice hotel in York for me and mother, 86

Taking my mother to York for a weekend and looking for a luxury hotel that isn't noisy but IS really comfortable and nice with a nice bar (ie NOT a business hotel) so we can enjoy a weekend of shopping, seeing the sights.

We're hoping to take the train so probably looking for somewhere within easy (she is ancient!) walking distance of the centre.

Googling has confused me. So if anyone knows anywhere nice, please suggest some places! The main thing is it must be nice, comfortable, and relaxing, and DEFINITELY not a soulless, business hotel. Somewhere nice to put your feet up with a cup of tea in the afternoon by the fire, that sort of thing.

Does such a place exist or do we need to go further out to eg Middlethorpe Hall? We don't really want to end up somewhere where there's a wedding and we feel in the way.

@Whatwouldnanado

The New Yorker is a bit of a trek from York city centre!

GellerYeller · 20/10/2021 17:24

Principal is lovely. Hilton is not. Grays Court gets good reviews and is fairly central I think

BirdIsland · 20/10/2021 17:26

There is a new Malmaison 5 minutes from the station. The Grand is probably the nicest hotel if you have a bit of money to spend, they have a nice spa too and very close to the station.

LeekChic · 20/10/2021 17:28

The Malmaison is lovely.

aftonwater · 20/10/2021 17:29

We have stayed at The Principal a couple of times and found it very comfortable.

Missatkins · 20/10/2021 17:33

I stayed at the Grand last month and it was lovely. Old fashioned concierge hospitality, comfy beds and beautiful spa.

Firesidefox · 20/10/2021 17:34

Thanks v much @Ricekrispie22 - v helpful indeed.

And @Whatwouldnanado New York is on my list for 2023 - I will bear that in mind, thank you!

Clementines town house hotel! (Used to be marmadukes).

It is really lovely!! About 10 minutes walk from the city centre (it's down bootham way)
.

I've stayed in the Malmaison a few times and it's lovely.

Whysotired · 20/10/2021 18:33

The new malmaison is amazing - has a Roof top bar as well. Definitely recommend. My new fav hotel in York lol

Keladrythesaviour · 20/10/2021 18:42

Definitely Gray's Court. Right next to the Minster and central to town. Easy to get a taxi from the station. Lovely rooms, wonderful customer service. The breakfasts are to die for. We didn't eat dinner there (but an Italian around the corner is incredible!) And the bar area was fully of comfy seating, and always relatively quiet.
We really enjoyed our stay there.

Hopefully the photos work! Only thing to be conscious of is the stairs, depending on how your mother is on her legs. There weren't loads from memory but it is an old building so stone and carpet and I don't think a lift.

Grays Court looks lovely @Keladrythesaviour - thank you for the recommendation, I might give them a call. I've just been trying to get through to the Grand and failed, so will try Grays Court as it looks so nice.

Thank you, and am following up all the other suggestions, too.

If you don’t mind being further out. Middlethorpe Hall is lovely. It’s not at all ‘weddingy’. I take my elderly mother there quite regularly and she absolutely loves it. It’s got a gentrified air that the other city hotels don’t have.

NotBabiesForLong · 24/10/2021 20:38

The Grand really is lovely. You can reserve via booking.com so no need to ring.

The judges Lodging is lovely too. Much smaller, very central, with roaring fires.
