What are you looking for?
Not much in St.Helens, Glass or Transport museum, some parks Taylor park and walks Billinge Hill, Knowsley safari Park, Town centres very quiet.
The Good thing about St.Helens is its location and fast road links, 2 miles to the M62 so you can be in North Wales in 40 mins or the lakes in just over an hour
I would suggest Liverpool as its not far either by car or train, its a top day out.
Loads to see and do plenty of shopping.

If you are free Saturday Morning great Homer Street Market is good, very different week to week, its all over by 2pm though

Just a food thought
One of the best food places is just a short drive out of the town centre.
You cant book, just turn up and they will feed you.

The good thing about Liverpool is all the good stuff is close together so you can see a lot on foot.

New Brighton is a nice small Sea side place just over the river

To be honest you could easily spend a week in Merseyside as there is plenty to see and do.
Dont forget to report back

I was in Liverpool at the weekend and DD (nearly 13) enjoyed a trip to the Cat Cafe, it's on Bold Street in the city centre. We also like the Tate Gallery, not sure what's on at the moment.

What is parking like?

Plenty of multi stories in liverpool city centre. Cheapest ones by the train station, Mount pleasant, St johns.
Do not park in liverpool one car park as it is extortionate and it is easy to walk around liverpool. Or you could get the train in from St Helen's.
Manchester is equally accessible from St Helens. There is lego land discovery and skiing near Trafford Park.
