Would you spend a few nights in Exeter...?

Me and DP have a week off in early Sept, just us two.
We have an overnight hotel stay booked on the Sunday night in Chipping Camden which will be fab and then looking to continue south for a few nights Monday to Wednesday nights.
I've found a lovely Air BnB in Exeter, 10 mins walk from the town with parking. Is there enough to do for us for 3 days? We like to park the car once arrived and explore on foot or maybe easy public transport.

There's plenty to do in Exeter, it's also really convenient for any of the coastal towns and Dartmoor. I live here so maybe a little biased

Aw thanks for you post whenim

We like to mooch around, drink and eat nice food.

Can we get bus or train to coast etc? Prefer not to get in the car once arrived and parked as drive lots day to day.

Really easy train ride down to Exmouth, which has a gorgeous beach about 10 minute walk from the station

Sounds perfect! Hoping there's a good chippy nearby as fish and chips on the beach is a must when you live in the landlocked Midlands Smile

Yep trains are really easy to anywhere, exmouth, Torquay and Paignton. Plenty of places for food either on the high street or down on the quay

whenimwrongiknowimwrong · 17/08/2021 19:25

Also if you're feeling very energetic there's a place on the quay called paddle and saddles where you can hire bikes and cycle the cycle path to either exmouth or Dawlish Warren (plenty of pubs on route) or hire a kayak and go up the river to the pubs along the way

WTF99 · 17/08/2021 19:56

Ooh....it all sounds fab! Thanks both Smile

I've booked it.....yay!

Love Topsham, great for an afternoon, also Dart Farm is great for a mooch around.

LemonRoses · 17/08/2021 20:51

Lovely restaurant you get a ferry to in Topsham.

BillieSpain · 17/08/2021 20:51

Absolutely you must go to Topsham. 10 mins on train from Exeter.

Brilliant Antiques centre and the 'topsham ten' (pubs)

Lovely place. Greatt cream teas in the Avocaat cafe (sp?)

BillieSpain · 17/08/2021 20:53

Honestly I visited Exeter for three days in July and it was too long and won’t be doing that again! Very shocked at the number of drug addicts everywhere. Strolling past the cathedral green on our last evening (about 21:00!) witnessed a very violent fight between two women. The rest of the green at that time seemed to be just pissed! I have worked in inner city London at all hours so am not a natural pearl clutcher!

However love Topsham (usually stay there when visiting family and now know why!). There is a fantastic Japanese restaurant recently opened in Exeter which I can recommend. The long walk around the quay / river is nice. Sorry I agree with others re jumping in the car and heading out of town! Some very nice restaurants in Topsham (including Salutation Inn or the Galley but you will need to book - train there and taxi back if you don’t want to drive?). I think there is a cycle path along the Estuary if you can hire bikes? Also there is a lovely new farm shop on the way to the quay.

I do love Exeter and love living here, but yes you're right it does have a huge problem with street drinkers currently, not really sure why and nobody seems to be doing anything about it. But aside from that it is a lovely city, I think it's more noticeable here because for a city the high street is relatively small. There also a great deal of good independent shops.
WTF99 · 18/08/2021 12:39

Aw well, we'll side step the street drinkers .
Really looking forward to.our break.
Thanks for contributions everyone

I went there in December and found plenty to do, and enjoyed Exmouth, though not brave enough to go in the sea as some people did, not in wetsuits but bikinis that would be small even if they were on Love Island!
