Halfway stop between London and Anglesey

Hello, has anyone done this drive and could recommend a nice overnight stop? We’d rather split the drive over two days if possible so as to arrive on Anglesey in mid-morning. Thank you!

How about Chester? It’s about 5 hours (according to Google maps). Decent hotels in the city, apparently. Though twenty minutes more would take you to Gladstone’s Library in Hawarden - which is a singularly lovely place to stay.

I envy you the drive along the North coast of Wales.

Somewhere like Stratford on Avon is approximately halfway , not too far off the motorway and a lovely place to stay.

Shrewsbury. More than half way in terms of miles, but probably half way in terms of hours (the first half is all motorways, the Welsh part is all single carriageway). There are some surprisingly nice hotels/pubs with rooms there. We stayed at the Lion and Pheasant.

It's only single carriageway once you get to Anglesey. The A55 N Wales is dual carriageway 70mph until Bangor really.

Hi Op,
We did this recently and it took us 9 hours:-(
Just to get out of.m25 took 3 plus hours and to Birmingham took 6.
The m25 and the m6 were a total pain
We then took the a41 for a long time. Once you get to Wales the rest of it is really easy and lovely drive to anglesey really.
It's the London and the Midlands that were a horror story!
We did talk about stopping half way next time. But I think we will just leave really early or really late to see if that works.

Hope you have a better journey than we did :-)

We went via A5/Betws y Coed (forget why but there was a good reason). That wasn’t a dual carriageway.

Sorry, I was assuming there that OP would be driving M6/M55/A55.

l2b2 · 17/08/2021 09:06

Or even M56 🤦‍♀️

To be fair, looking at the map that route makes far more sense! I can’t remember why we went inland, we must have been calling off somewhere.

Premier Inn at Trentham Gardens

It’s a 2.5hour drive on from there the next day.

I was coming on to say exactly this!! Nice places to eat in the village in the evening, have a walk round the gardens for a leg stretch and super kids play area, or splurge and visit the monkey forest next door. Up, breakfast and you’ll be in Anglesey for lunch.

Shrewsbury is a great stop. Nice places to eat/see/do too.
