Ideas for Keswick in the rain with 14 year old

Hi, we are booked to go to Keswick for the week on Wednesday but the forecast is rain, rain, and more rain! Does anyone have any suggestions for activities a 14 year old boy might like and preferably (for me!) any which are indoors in the dry? Thanks x

To be honest. Bring rain coats and just get stuck in. Rain is part of life here hah!!

However I can highly reccomend the Lakeland marine life centre and Dalton Zoo. Also the steam train/boats are really fun. Wray Castle is a fab day out too!!!

Kong Centre in Keswick has an indoor climbing wall and other activities.

Puzzling Place is mildly entertaining for an hour, full of optical illusions.

Further afield there is a cinema at the Rheged Centre near Penrith and the cafe there does nice pizza. Escape room at Workington.

Alternatively, embrace the rain and go Ghyll Scrambling? Loads of activity companies offer it.

We live locally and tend to wrap up in waterproofs and go out anyway. There isn't a plethora of indoor activities available.

The slate mine indoor climbing thing at Honnister Pass. I haven’t done it but have seen photos and it looks good. Mountain biking at Whinlatter.

Craftycorvid · 01/08/2021 22:23

Yep, slate mine. I’m not going to suggest the pencil museum....Grin

I've done that in fair weather in the rain it would be let's say interesting.

Paddle boarding on the lake would be great

loopyapp · 01/08/2021 22:28

Oh indoor climbing centre at Kendal is brilliant

museumum · 01/08/2021 22:31

If it’s that wet just go all in and do something in the water like kayaking or paddle boarding.

DepressedDD · 01/08/2021 22:40

@littlebilliie. Not the via ferrata thing…..they have something actually inside the mine now so would stay dry in the rain.

Think there might be a swimming pool in Keswick, never been to it though.

Titsywoo · 01/08/2021 22:52

I am in Keswick in 2 weeks and am hoping to go Ghyll Scrambling. It looks like so much fun and a bit of rain will make no difference! DD did it on a school trip 4 years ago and loved it.

CallofDutyWarZone · 01/08/2021 22:56

Many thanks everyone - great suggestions x

Rain can make all the difference and it can become unsafe

Don’t go to the pencil museum. It’s a trap designed to snare the wet tourist and is unremittingly tedious. Just take a raincoat.

idontlikealdi · 01/08/2021 23:42

Keswick,
You need appropriate clothes and go out anyway!

colouringindoors · 02/08/2021 00:27

Swimming pool isn't bad. My dd loves the pencil museum Grin

But as others have said take waterproofs and wellies and get stuck in.

Also it rarely rains ALL day. My dcs are there now and weather has been better than the forecast.

Undertheoldlindentree · 02/08/2021 03:06

We went years ago and all enjoyed the pencil museum much more than we expected to!

Haha! Just what is says on the tin then? 😂

The swimming pool has closed. It got filled with algae during Covid and the council can't afford to fix the filter system.

CallofDutyWarZone · 02/08/2021 16:27

Many thanks everyone for all of your suggestions - the weather forecast looks a bit better too and I'm looking forward to going x

Oh dear, I liked the pencil museum Grin

I always think the Lake District is at its best in rain. It's unnerving when you go and everywhere is hot and dry.

Another vote fir the pencil museum, not as dull as it sounds. We loved it.
