Hello,

I am taking the DC to the beach tomorrow. Ogmore by Sea looks good although about 1hr 40 mins from home. Has anyone been? If so, is there parking? Shop etc? Mixed info from different sites.

Any better suggestions welcomed too!
Cheers

Hi there is pay and display parking. No shop but normally a van doing teas coffees and snacks and normally an ice cream van. There’s a nice coffee place on the road in I’ll come back with the name

Thanks so much @OverByYer, you are a superstar Flowers. Do you know if you can pay via phone for parking?

Sounds like a good shout then. Looks better than ours!

Thanks again :)

Southerndown beach is nice too in same area - it’s where Dr Who was filmed ( David tenant era)

I am pretty sure it was cash parking but that was a good few months ago.

Simplelobsterhat · 28/07/2021 20:32

As pp said no shop but usually a couple of vans and toilets. Be aware you need cash for parking unless you want to faff with paying by phone. Also check tide times as not much beach at high tide, although plenty of rocks to explore and grass for picnics. There are some pubs in the valley leading down to it and also a ruined castle if you want to stop off - very pretty area.

However, nearby for a full beach day we prefer Dunraven Bay (Southerndown) and Rest Bay (which is other side of Porthcawl). Depends what you are looking for really.

Cross posted there - I think paying by phone was an option, but haven't done it myself.

There’s a village shop on the Main Road, if you come out of the beach car park and turn right. There’s a café next door but I never know when they are open. Cobbles up the road towards Bridgend is nice but they shut at 2 I think. They have a fish and chip shop now in the evening, meant to be good but I haven’t tried yet.

There are toilets, an ice cream van, a coffee van and a burger van that frequent the car park, but I’m guessing their presence is weather dependent.

Watch out for tide times, when the tide is high it comes right in and depending how high it is there might be little to no sand.

The road from Bridgend is closed in the evening at the moment (from 4 o’clock), so if you’re staying later you will need to go around the other way.

I can’t remember if last time we went we didn’t have cash or couldn’t be faffed with the phone! We ended up parking on the road by the estuary and walking in!

tywysoges · 28/07/2021 20:37

Cross post with everybody Grin

You can pay by phone, the app is PayByPhone.

Suzi888 · 28/07/2021 20:39

Pay and display car park. Public toilets are available. No shop on the beach but usually an ice cream van.
The Pelican pub serves lovely food. There’s also a farmhouse opposite the pub, down a lane that serves cream teas (or did pre covid).
Horse riding again opposite the pub, takes you across the sand dunes. If the tide is out and you cross over to the sand dunes, beware there is a strong current and the tide comes in fast!

zebrapig · 28/07/2021 20:42

Not much to add. You can pay by phone but we struggle with the signal sometimes (O2). The castle & stepping stones are good fun if the tide is right, follow the path the other side of the stepping stones to get to a wobbly bridge and the pretty little village of Merthyr Mawr.

Have a lovely day

tywysoges · 28/07/2021 21:05

Oh I recommend booking if you’re going to Cobbles, it can get quite busy at times.

Agree that phone signal can be hit and miss in the area, Southerndown is a mobile black spot, though at the beach it’s better than at the village. I haven’t been to Southerndown this summer but they normally have a parking attendant at the entrance to charge for the car park - not sure if just weekends or weekdays too. It used to be cash only but with covid I think they got a card machine last summer…
