Got tickets to theatre in June so staying in London near Covent garden for 2 nights.

I’m very out of touch with the dining scene these days - any recommendations for higher end dining , don’t mind paying a bit more for good quality food - any style except Italian.

Just DH & I .

We used to go to the Savoy for pre theatre set menu but now it’s Gordon Ramsay.

Am thinking about Hawksmoor - but do steaks live up the hype - am fed up with too many poor quality chewy steaks?

Am planning Southank market Friday lunchtime - which I haven’t been to for a few years.

Hawksmoor steaks are great; Blacklock is also lovely for steak/meat - same group, I think. Dishoom is lovely for Indian food, although you have to queue to get in.

Hawksmoor good and I also love Black and Blue for steaks.

I went to Hawksmoor (Borough) on Friday and shared a Chateaubriand which was lovely! Meal did cost us £150 for 2 adults (and a toddler sharing our food) with no alcohol though so quite spendy.

Covent Garden has a sushi samba and sticks n sushi which also has good food. A few nice burger places too if you want to grab something after the theatre/lunch.

M Restaurants is great for steaks. They have places in the City (which might fit in with you being around Southwark) and also near Victoria.

If you're going east at all I highly recommend Som Saa near Spitalfields if you like Thai. We also enjoy cinnamon club/cinnamon kitchen. I've eaten at Hawksmoor and the steak was decent.

The food isn't 'high end' but Brasserie Zedel is a lovely place that feels a bit wow. Nice bar too. The German Gymnasium at Kings Cross is nice - gorgeous building.

We love fine dining and the best meal we have ever had was at Palm Court in Covent Garden. Every bite was truly amazing.

We went to Hawksmoor recently and thought it was a bit overrated. Would recommend Barrafina instead - high end tapas.

Definitely Southbank market by the Royal Festival Hall for lunch, lots of lovely options.

Bumping as I am too looking for recommendations which include somewhere we can get decent steak (not black lock as going for Sunday lunch). Looking for something that feels a bit special compared to what we can get here in Leeds/Manchester

Gauchos for steak x

FeelinSpendy · 08/06/2021 22:45

Gaucho or Smith & Wollensky are very good for steak.

Hawksmoor perfectly nice but a bit overrated imo. Would try some of the old classics - Sketch, St John, Le Gavroche, the Wolesley, Moro, Quo Vadis, Claridges. The River Cafe is amazing but is Italian. Lyle's is supposed to be really good and Rochelle Canteen.

If you are near Covent Garden and can get a table I'd always recommend Rules

Restlessinthenorth · 09/06/2021 19:54

Some great suggestions here....night spent googling for me! Hass anyone tried The Hansom at St Pancreas? Never heard of it before but it looks beautiful as I stumbled across it on my search

Hawksmoor is amazing. I would recommend the Air Street branch. Lovely art deco restaurant

I hope that the London-based contibutors to this thread realise that, as per comments in a recent thread about moving out, we’re all to be pitied for not understanding how much more enjoyable our lives could be if only we fled from this well-catered hellhole.
