50th birthday celebrations...

My DH will be 50 in October, looking for ideas for a weekend away. We have 3 teenagers which does push the price up...
Would love to find a nice hotel with a pool. Have had a look at Edinburgh but its a bit of a drive (from yorkshire) so would probably need 2 nights, which again makes it more expensive.
Has anyone got any marvellous suggestions?
Thanks

If you're going to Edinburgh then there's so much to see and do out and about that I wouldn't spend money on a particularly expensive hotel as you won't get your monies worth from it, or if you do, you miss half of Edinburgh! The Marriott in Edinburgh isn't overly fancy but if you're driving up it does benefit from parking and a pool and is on good bus routes into the city centre.
Or would you rather a "hotel resort" such as Peebles Hydro?
What about The Midland in Manchester?

Thanks for the suggestions! I had a look at the blu raddison in Edinburgh which looked lovely but probably over my budget. Might save that for my own 50th Grin.
Also looked at Appleby Castle, they have cottages that would accommodate the 5 of us and it looks fairly special.
We like the Lake District so this may be an option.

Appleby castle looks amazing!
The Novotel in Edinburgh has a pool and tends to be a bit cheaper. It's still walking distance from the Old Town but not quite as fancy as somewhere like the Radisson (although I went to a function there and wasn't particularly impressed). And also the Apex Grassmarket. At both you'd need to pay for parking.
In the Lakes....Low wood bay, it's got a pool but you've also got activities on the lake englishlakes.co.uk/low-wood-bay/
Langdale Chase is beautiful but no pool www.langdalechase.co.uk/

Ooohhh, they all look lovely! I think I'm going to discount Edinburgh as its probably too far for a weekend in the middle of term. Will definitely keep those hotels you have suggested in mind though as I would love to go up there at some point.
