Hello!
I am about to visit Yorkshire over May half term with 2 kids aged 15 and 12.
We are staying in Harrogate and have a plan to cover York over 2 days doing the usual attractions with a York pass.
We have a day set aside for Whitby hoping the weather does turn.
We also have a day set aside for Harrogate mooching around.
This leaves us with 3 days to cover the moors. I have looked up Aysgarth falls, Malham caves and Ingleton.
There is loads when I look online but wanted to know tips from people well versed in the area (especially something for the kids)
Any tips would be fab!
Thanks very much
xx

Fountains Abbey isn't far and is a wonderful place. Lightwater Valley or Flamingo Land for a theme park day?

Sorry, just seen you say the Moors, so they might not suit.

You're going to be doing a lot of driving if you're planning 3 days round the NYMoors and a day trip to Whitby, I'd be tempted to look for things to do to the west of the A1.
Dalby Forest - Go Ape or Mountain biking
There's the steam railway from Pickering but they might be too old to find that exciting? Or this one might be closer www.embsayboltonabbeyrailway.org.uk/
Train into Leeds for the day if the weather is bad?
Castle Howard
Definitely Malham and Fountain's Abbey.
I'd get your kids searching the internet then they can't moan it's boring!!

On your day at Whitby, I’d park at Pickering and take the steam train. You’ll get a lovely scenic trip through the moors.
On subsequent days, I wouldn’t spend so much time driving, or I’d at least drive in the other direction and explore the Dales. Fountains Abbey is definitely worth a whole day. There are beautiful water gardens and woodland to explore and a visit to the deer park is highly recommended.
I’d also suggest Brimham Rocks as it’s so close to Harrogate.

Brimham Rocks is great for walking / scrambling and not too far from where you're staying. It's NT so you may need to book a car parking space in advance given the holidays

Knaresborough is quite interesting for a look around.
Bolton Abbey
How STean Gorge

These are more for wet weather days-

Bradford- media museum
Leeds- lovely place for a wander, plus the Thackray medical museum
Eden camp- perhaps a bit further to drive?

Ripon, for a wander around Booths (lovely supermarket!)

Stump Cross Caverns is cool and worth a visit, nice cafe and gift shop too.

You might have your itinerary sown up by now, but The Forbidden Corner in Leyburn North Yorks is good family day out.

IdblowJonSnow · 31/05/2021 00:04

Also came on to say the Forbidden Corner.
