Peak District - Matlock area or Bakewell?

We're thinking of heading to the Peak District this summer for the first time. Have found a few cottage options, one just to the south near Kniveton (which I think is outside of the national park), one near Matlock, one near Bakewell.

Is there any big difference among these areas? Looking for nice countryside, hilly walks with the kids (8&10), etc. Thought I'd ask the hive before randomly choosing one! Thanks!

We had a brilliant holiday in Matlock when our dc were a couple of years younger than yours. We did the Heights of Abraham, Matlock Bath aquarium, Gulliver’s Kingdom, Peak Rail, Crich Tramway and Chatsworth.

I live in Derbyshire and I'd say Bakewell, it has more charm as a town, and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Saying that, the PP is right there is loads to do round Matlock for kids, but as there is not much distance between the two you can easily go between them. But if you want a prettier place to potter round of an evening, Bakewell wins I'd say.
As well as the recommendations above, have a look at Monsal Dale for walking and cycling, the cafe at Hassop Station is lovely.
Ps if you did end up in Kniveton it's also a nice area but much more of a trek up to Peak District.

I used to live in the Peaks and IME Bakewell is far prettier. Much better walking routes around there (Win Hill, Lose Hill, Padley Gorge, Mam Tor etc) and lovely villages, plus Chatsworth of course if you want a bigger day out. Agree with the pp about hiring bikes at Hassop for a day out on the Monsal Trail.

You're also only a short drive from Matlock if your wanted to go to Blackpool (aka Matlock Bath Grin) for Gullivers and so on.

Bakewell is great for walking but incredibly touristy - one of the pubs has a sign in 6 languages welcoming patrons... I prefer Matlock and if you like beer at all, Matlock is amazing for such a small place.
