London - Oyster card for kids travel?

Hi
I've visited London a few times before by myself and always just tapped in and out on the tube with my contactless card. I'm taking DS8 for a few days in half term and just wondering if the free travel for under 11s with a paying adult requires an Oyster card or if I can just use contactless as normal? There's conflicting information online from my google.

Thanks in advance!

Just use your contactless. Go through the wide gates on the tube so he can go first.

You usually have to pay for NR.
