Whats the best route from Yorkshire to Edinburgh?

We are booked into a holiday cottage near Scarborough for our summer holiday and dear daughter has asked if we can carry on to Scotland as she wants to feel like shes visited another country this year. So we have provisionally agreed to add some days on at the end in Scotland.

Looking at map it seems the A1 straight up to Edinburgh is most logical with a stop halfway (maybe Alnwick for the Harry Potter setting). Is this best? or is it worth going on the smaller roads? We are torn between wanting a scenic route and also wanting a straight route to avoid car sickness

Or is the A68 better in terms of getting to Edinburgh?

For Scarborough I'd probably go A1 - A19 and through the Tyne Tunnel.

I prefer the A68 route as it's more interesting but i think it's better if you're heading further inland in Yorkshire. It might also depend which side of Edinburgh you're starting from and what time of day you're coming / going if you wanted to avoid certain areas (Sheriffhall roundabout at rush hour I'm looking at you!)

There’s really not a lot in it at all. Sometimes it even depends on the time of day. The A68 through Kielder Forest is certainly scenic and has some lovely laces for a leg stretch.
